Syntroleum Delivers Single Battlefield Fuel to DoD for
Testing
TULSA, Okla., Jan. 22 Syntroleum Corporation announced today that it had completed
manufacture and delivery of a quantity of synthetic "single battlefield fuel,"
under its contract with the U.S. Army, under Department of Defense (DoD)
direction, which was announced on September 19, 2002. The synthetic jet fuel
was converted from natural gas via Syntroleum's gas-to-liquids (GTL)
technology and formulated to interchange with JP-8, which is the U.S.
military's single battlefield fuel for aircraft and ground equipment under
current defense policy. The purpose for the fuel is to allow the military to
test performance characteristics of the synthetic fuel under a wide variety of
vehicle and engine test conditions.
Commensurately, Syntroleum has also manufactured test quantities of
synthetic automotive diesel delivering it to Mitsui & Co., Ltd. for testing at
the Japan Automotive Research Center for a consortium of Toyota, Nissan, Honda
and other Japanese auto companies.
These fuels were manufactured in Syntroleum's Refining Pilot Unit at their
research and development facility using Syntroleum's proprietary Synfining
technology for converting Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process wax and oil into
synthetic fuel.
Since its development was announced on August 22, 2000, Syntroleum's
Synfining technology for upgrading raw FT products to finished ultra-clean
fuels has been tested extensively at the company's research facilities in
Tulsa, OK. It has been successfully demonstrated in approximately
11,000 hours of operation at pilot plant scale, including the runs to produce
the specified products for the DoD and Mitsui programs. With the addition of
Synfining, Syntroleum can provide a complete and integrated system for
converting natural gas into ultra-clean synthetic fuels. The system consists
of Syntroleum's proprietary Natural Gas Reformer using compressed air for the
production of synthesis gas, its proprietary Fischer-Tropsch reactor for
converting synthesis gas into FT liquids and wax, and the Synfining unit to
upgrade raw FT products into finished fuels and other products. Syntroleum
intends to begin licensing its Synfining technology as part of the complete
Syntroleum Process, or separately to users desiring to upgrade raw FT
products.
Syntroleum Corporation is the developer and licensor of proprietary gas-
to-liquids (GTL) technology for converting gas into synthetic liquid
hydrocarbons. The company, in partnership with others, plans to build plants
using its technology in a number of global locations.
