AIADA Supports House, Senate Proposals to Permanently Repeal Death Tax
WASHINGTON, Jan. 21 The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) strongly supports efforts in Congress to permanently repeal the death tax. In the House, Reps. Jennifer Dunn (R-WA) and Bud Cramer (D-AL) crafted a bill, which will eliminate the death tax in 2010. On the Senate side, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) introduced similar legislation to fully repeal the tax and push up the phase out date to 2005. "We look forward to working with lawmakers to protect America's small- business auto retailer, who plays a key role in sustaining the nation's economy," said AIADA Chairman Jamie Auffenberg. "AIADA strongly supports the permanent elimination of the federal death tax and encourages Congress to repeal this onerous tax once and for all." The landmark tax relief package enacted on June 7, 2001, includes broad- based income tax cuts for individual businesses and the elimination of the estate tax, also known as the "death tax." Because of arcane congressional budget rules all of the tax cuts in the new law will "sunset" in 2011. Thus, the death tax will be reinstated only one year after it is repealed. The temporary nature of the death tax repeal provisions has created numerous problems and uncertainty for family-owned businesses.
