City Of Long Beach California Orders Refuse Trucks Powered by 280 HP C Gas Plus Engines

VANCOUVER, Jan. 20, 2003; Cummins Westport Inc. a joint venture of Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Indiana, and Westport Innovations Inc. of Vancouver announced that the City of Long Beach, California has placed an order for the Cummins Westport C Gas Plus low- emissions natural gas engine for use in refuse collection trucks.

Seventeen 280-horsepower C Gas Plus engines will be installed in automatic side-loading refuse collection trucks manufactured by Sterling Condor of Willoughby, Ohio, a division of Freightliner LLC. of Portland, Oregon. The engines are scheduled for delivery starting April 2003. This is the first purchase of the C Gas Plus-powered engine by the City of Long Beach. The Cummins distributor responsible for the order is Cummins Cal Pacific of Los Angeles, California.

"The City of Long Beach has a long-standing tradition of operating greener alternative-fuel vehicles wherever feasible. The C Gas Plus natural gas engine is lightweight and has sufficient torque and horsepower capabilities for our refuse trucks," said Ed Chaffin, Superintendent of Fleet Services for the City of Long Beach, Department of Long Beach Energy.

Cummins Westport President Hugh Foden added, "We are pleased that a customer who has a well-established history using natural gas engines has chosen the C Gas Plus. In the medium-duty refuse haulage market, units equipped with our engine provide enough torque to handle loads up to 12 tonnes, while offering substantially lower emissions than levels set by the Environmental Protection Agency last year."

The City of Long Beach has been operating low-emissions natural gas vehicles since 1991. Of its total fleet of 2,000 vehicles, it currently operates 325 heavy-duty and light-duty natural gas vehicles. The 17 natural gas-powered refuse trucks will expand the current fleet. The trucks will be equipped with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) onboard fuel storage system.

The 280-horsepower C Gas Plus is a state-of-the-art spark-ignited natural gas engine. It is certified to emit 28% less oxides of nitrogen and non- methane hydrocarbons than the ceilings established by the Environmental Protection Agency, which came into effect in October 2002. It also produces less greenhouse gases and is nearly 12 decibels quieter than its diesel counterparts.

Cummins is a global power leader in engines, electrical power generation systems and related technologies. Westport Innovations is the leading developer of natural gas fuel systems for diesel engines. Cummins Westport, formed in 2001, develops and markets low-emissions alternative fuel engines manufactured by Cummins. The C Gas Plus is manufactured by Cummins in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
