Detroit Auto Show: World Premiere of All-New Sienna
DETROIT, Jan. 6, 2003; The all-new second-generation Toyota
Sienna minivan made its world premiere at a press conference today at the
2003 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).
The all-new 2004 Sienna is a true born-and-bred American. The large
percentage of its engineering design and development was done at the Toyota
Technical Center (TTC) in Ann Arbor, Mich. A significant amount of its
styling, was penned at Toyota's CALTY Design Studio in Newport Beach, Calif.
At launch, more than 90 percent of Sienna's content will be sourced from North
American suppliers. Finally, Sienna will be built, exclusively, on an all-new
assembly line at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (TMMI) in Princeton.
"The all-American Sienna has been improved, refined and enlarged in nearly
every metric comparison," said Don Esmond, Toyota Division senior vice
president and general manager. "The new Sienna will be defined by
class-leading interior comfort, convenience, and flexibility that will meet
the everyday driving needs of the American family."
The new Sienna rides on an all-new low-slung chassis with a wheelbase that
is more than five inches longer than the current generation Sienna. Both its
front and rear tracks are nearly four inches wider, yet its turning radius is
reduced by more than three feet, nearly one foot tighter than its closest
competitor.
Inside, Sienna offers class-leading cargo volume behind the third row, as
well as the most passenger volume among front drive minivans. In total, its
interior volume has increased by more than 44 cubic feet. Thanks to the
extensive use of sound damping materials and best-in-class aerodynamics,
Sienna's cabin will set a new standard in low NVH.
Sienna's interior is as versatile and flexible as it is spacious and
quiet. Sienna offers two distinctly different second-row seating options that
are easy to adjust, tumble or remove. In its seven-passenger configuration,
Sienna features second-row captains chairs with a passenger-side chair that
can be moved side-to-side, offering either a bench or a bucket arrangement.
In its eight-passenger configuration, Sienna features a second-row, three-way
split/folding bench with a Front and Center(TM) middle seat that can be moved
almost 13-inches closer to the front seat, making infants in child-seats more
accessible.
Standard equipment on all models is a 60/40 Split & Stow 3rd Row(TM) bench
seat that folds flat into the floor. Either side of the seat can be stowed
separately with a low-effort, one-hand operation. With the entire rear seat
stowed and the second row seats removed, four-by-eight sheets of plywood can
be loaded flat onto Sienna's floor.
The new Sienna will deliver a substantial boost in power, fuel-efficiency,
and refinement, thanks to an all-new 230-horsepower V6 engine and an all-new
five-speed automatic transmission. Both the engine and the transmission will
be built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia's powertrain production
facility.
During internal testing the compact and lightweight powertrain was capable
of launching Sienna from zero-to-60 in a best-in-class time of 8.4 seconds.
At 25 miles-per-gallon Sienna will have one of the highest highway mileage
ratings in its class. The powertrain will be certified as a Level II
Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV-II).
The current Sienna has been one of the top-rated minivans in both
government and Insurance Institute crash testing. Not only will the new
Sienna achieve best-in-class results again, it will be one of the top-rated
vehicles of any kind to be tested. And, with standard four-wheel anti-lock
brakes, Sienna will provide best-in-class 60-to-zero braking performance in
both wet and dry road conditions. Vehicle Stability Control with Traction
Control and Brake Assist will be available as an option. Front side and
curtain shield SRS airbags covering all three seat rows will be standard
equipment on the XLE Limited grade, and optional on all other grades.
The new Sienna will come in four model grades, CE, LE, XLE, and the new
top-of-the-line XLE Limited. All four grades will be available in a 4x2
configuration. The LE, XLE, and XLE Limited will also offer all-wheel-drive.
The CE and LE will be available in both seven- and eight-passenger
configurations.
An array of convenience features will be available on the new Sienna.
Among them are a DVD rear seat entertainment system with wireless headphones,
navigation system with rear view camera, rear seat audio, 17-inch alloy wheels
with run-flat tires, laser cruise control, wood grain leather steering wheel
with audio controls, front and rear parking sonar, tri-zone air conditioning,
second and third row sunshades, and a JBL Synthesis AM/FM/cassette/six-CD
changer with 10-speaker surround sound audio system.
"Bigger, bolder, and beautiful, the all-new Sienna will lay rightful claim
to the mantel of best-in-class minivan," said Esmond. "And, with very
affordable pricing it will set a new standard that will be hard to beat."
The new Sienna will arrive in dealerships in early March.
