Subject: Sammons Lands Ride for AC Indoor Race
USAR¹S DANNY SAMMONS LANDS RIDE FOR INDOOR TQ MIDGET EVENT
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Series regular Danny
Sammons will get a chance to test his flat-track skills after landing a ride
for the Budweiser-sponsored Atlantic City Indoor Three-Quarter Midget Race
on Sat., Jan. 18, at Boardwalk Hall.
Sammons, an 18-year-old from Bordentown, N.J., will enter the event in a
team car to Hamilton, N.J.¹s Stephen Stull. It will mark Sammons¹s first
start in an open-wheel car since his successful Quarter-Midget career ended
four years ago.
³I¹m excited to have an opportunity to run this race,² said Sammons, who
finished 17th in the overall 2002 USAR Hooters ProCup points standings.
³What¹s pretty neat is that this will be the first time I¹ve ever been able
to run a professional race in my homestate.²
Though Sammons left Quarter-Midgets to begin running a Pro Truck in 1999, he
wasn¹t able to participate in any New Jersey events. By state law all race
car drivers must be 18 years old.
Sammons, who will return to the USAR Hooters ProCup Northern Tour in 2003,
will be part of history in the making as Atlantic City¹s Boardwalk Hall
hosts its first auto race since 1981.
TQ Midget cars, which are lower-slung and slightly smaller than regular
Midgets, ran an annual winter series inside the famed Boardwalk Hall from
1965 to O81. Motorsports then took a two-decade hiatus from the seaside
venue.
The Boardwalk Hall, which underwent a multi-million dollar renovation
several years ago, is well-known for hosting the annual Miss America
pagaent. Hockey games, boxing matches, concerts and shows also take place in
the building.
Sammons will compete on an oval track set up around the outside of the
Hall¹s hockey rink. The concrete surface will be treated to ensure drivers
can get maximum traction.
Over 90 TQ Midgets are currently entered in the event, which features a
40-lap main paying $2,000 to win.
Sammons will compete against TQ standouts and several accomplished
short-track drivers from other Northeast divisions, including O01 NASCAR
Weekly Racing Series champion Ted Christopher; dirt Modified stars Tim
McCreadie and Vic Coffey; former URC Sprint Car champion Curt Michael; and
Supermodified standouts Lou Cicconi Jr., Joey Payne, Greg Furlong and J.
Scott Martel.
In all, over 90 drivers from eight states and one Canadian province.
Individual chairback seating for over 7,000 is available in the Hall¹s
balcony.
Tickets for the event are available by calling Ticketmaster at 800-736-1420,
visiting the Boardwalk Hall box office or on the day of the race.
Further information on the event can be obtained by calling 609-888-3618.
