Engelhard Environmental Technology Approved for Hybrid Trucks, Buses
ISELIN, N.J.--Dec. 11, 2002--Emission-control technology from Engelhard Corporation has become the first approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for use in engines that operate on a combination of natural gas and diesel fuels.CARB has approved use of Engelhard's DPX TM catalytic particulate filter on Dual-Fuel(TM) engines developed by Clean Air Partners (CAP). Refuse trucks, school buses and other heavy-duty vehicles that operate in urban areas are considered the primary market for these engines.
"This is an important development for California, but it has valuable applications for any region in the country - especially urban areas, where air quality is an issue" said Kevin Campbell, CAP's sales manager of low emissions vehicles. "Dual-Fuel offers important fuel economy benefits, and, with Engelhard's DPX filter, we can make them run very cleanly."
According to CARB, diesel particulate matter is responsible for about 70% of the total toxic risk to Californians from air pollution and is linked to an increased incidence of lung cancer and respiratory illnesses such as asthma. In addition to reducing particulates, Engelhard's DPX filter dramatically reduces emissions of aldehydes, non-methane hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
"Diesel engine technology has come a long way in the last decade," said Edmund A. Stanczak, Engelhard's group vice president and general manager, Environmental Technologies. "The advent of dual-fuel systems with DPX makes the energy-efficient diesel more appealing environmentally."
In addition to the Dual-Fuel engine, Engelhard DPX filters are approved in California under Executive Order D-385-6 for installation on vehicles powered by Caterpillar, Cummins, DDC, International, Mack, and Volvo engines. The filters are in use today on thousands of on- and off-road vehicles around the world.
CAP is a high technology firm that specializes in the development of low emission technology solutions for both the transportation and power generation industries. Over 1,300 vehicles are outfitted with CAP's Dual-Fuel(TM) engine.
