Toyota Reports November Sales Down 5.2%
TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 3, 2002; -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported November sales of 136,259 vehicles, down 5.2 percent from last year's record November."There's a basic fundamental strength in the economy," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "I think consumers are looking for excuses to be exuberant."
The Toyota Division posted November sales of 119,150 units, down 3.3 percent from last November. Toyota Division passenger cars led the sales pace with record November sales of 66,171 units, up 4.3 percent. Toyota Camry sales continued its positive selling streak with 32,190 units delivered, up 6.1 percent over last November. Camry calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales currently stand at 403,136 units, an increase of 12.4 percent over the same period last year. Corolla sales were up 13.3 percent with 22,586 units sold. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan celebrated best-ever sales of 1,956 units, up 19.0 percent from last year's record November.
Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) sales upstaged last year's record November with 8,706 units, an increase of 12.5 percent. The legendary Land Cruiser SUV posted 668 units sold, up 22.3 percent.
TMS delivered its first two market-ready hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and the University of California, Davis (UCD) at a press conference on the UCI campus yesterday. The official delivery was the first step in a plan to establish California fuel-cell "community" partnerships of government, business and higher education that will tackle product, infrastructure and consumer-acceptance challenges.
The Lexus Division reported November sales of 17,109 vehicles, bringing the Lexus CYTD sales total to 209,264 units, up 3.3 percent over the same period last year.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 58.2 percent of total November sales. There were 26 selling days compared to 25 last November, which accounted for percentage decreases on a daily selling rate.
