Vortec Power Team Captures Two First and Second Places

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Vortec Power Team captured two first and two second place finishes in high-speed boats powered by the Vortec HP3 8100 V8 engine at the 2002 American Power Boat Association Offshore Race Series World Championships Nov. 18-24 in Key West, Fla.

In the Super Vee Light Single class, Kava Kava/Air Jamaica Vacations captured the World Championships in a Vortec-powered Extreme powerboat with a combined time of 1:22:32 for two races.

"Our Vortec engine withstood yet another durable test even with a pre-race collision," said Steve Miklos, driver for Kava Kava/Air Jamaica Vacations. "The Fury team gave us a strong race, but we endured."

Team Fury came in second place in the Super Vee Light Single class in a Vortec-powered Phantom powerboat with a time combined time of 1:23:02.

In the Super Vee Light Single class, race one consisted of nine laps on the 5.25-mile course and race two totaled 11 laps.

In the Super Vee Light Twin class, UTZ Quality Foods/Castaway captured the World Championships in a Vortec-powered Fountain powerboat with a combined time of 1:27:49 for the two races.

"It was nice to be second in the Nationals, but it feels really good to win the World Championship," said Mitch Miller, driver for UTZ Quality Foods/Castaway. "We had to work hard up to the seventh lap then things fell together and the Vortec engines came through again for us."

Pier 57/Stainless Marine came in second place in a Vortec-powered Fountain powerboat with a combined time of 1:28:01.

In the Super Vee Light Twin class, race one consisted of 10 laps on the 5.25-mile course and race two totaled 13 laps.

The Vortec Power Team is composed of nine teams, including Kava Kava/Air Jamaica Vacations, High Noon Racing, Pier 57, Team Solarized, Team Fury, Team Scarab, UTZ Quality Foods, Rodriguez Group and Team Ettore.

The APBA World Championship in Key West, Fla., was the final race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consisted of eight offshore races at various venues with competitors in 10 race classes.
