Rand Racing - Season Summary
Rand Racing capped a dream season in 2002 with two championships in the Rolex
Sports Car Series SRPII class. Terry Borcheller won the class driver title
and paced the rookie team to its first team championship. Rand Racing
completed a perfect class record of 10 wins, 10 pole positions and 10 fastest
laps in as many races, starting with last year's series finale.
It was victory by design. Knowing experience was the key to success, team
owner Bill Rand contracted the veteran Risi Competizione crew to prepare the
team's two Nissan Lolas and enlisted top drivers Terry Borcheller, Marino
Franchitti, Niclas Jönsson, Ralf Kelleners, Anthony Lazzaro and Jerry Nadeau.
It was an unbeatable combination.
The run started at Daytona International Speedway in 2001, as Borcheller and
Lazzaro topped the SRPII class in the team's first race. Returning for the
2002 Rolex 24 at Daytona, Kelleners was quickest in class during testing and
Lazzaro claimed the SRPII pole by more than three seconds. Borcheller,
Kelleners, Lazzaro and Rand led every class lap during the 24-hour race, won
the class by 25 laps and finished third overall.
By season's end, the team had its record of class wins and poles plus six
overall podium finishes. They included a powerful two-three finish in the
six-hour race at Watkins Glen International, with Borcheller, Kelleners and
Lazzaro edging Franchitti, Jönsson and Rand.
by the numbers
Borcheller and Lazzaro each won seven SRPII races in 2002, six together.
Kelleners drove the winning car three times and Rand twice. Franchitti,
Jönsson and Nadeau all notched a win - each in their first race with the
team. Borcheller and Lazzaro have never lost a race as Rand Racing
co-drivers and Lazzaro is undefeated with the team.
Borcheller won four class pole positions and Franchitti, Kelleners and
Lazzaro one each. Two race grids were set by points. Borcheller posted the
fastest race lap three times; Franchitti, Kelleners and Lazzaro were each
quickest twice.
The team's two Nissan Lolas completed 94 per cent of the SRPII laps during
the season. Asked how they achieved such impressive results, the drivers all
attributed their success to the talented Risi Competizione crew, whose
meticulous preparation of two very fast cars paid off in a season to savor.
