Harley-Davidson Expands Use of SWANTECH's SWANview Systems; SWANview Delivers Earliest Detection of Wear for Endurance Testing
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--Nov. 20, 2002-- Harley-Davidson(R) Motor Company is expanding the use of SWANview(TM) machine condition monitoring systems to a second system. The decision is based on the success of its first SWANview system, installed at Harley-Davidson's state-of-the-art Product Development Center (PDC) in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.Harley-Davidson Test Engineering confirmed that SWANview detects component wear during endurance testing early enough to stop testing before the occurrence of secondary damage. Endurance testing is part of a comprehensive testing program that is performed on Harley-Davidson products to continuously improve quality and reliability.
No other technology has been able to detect wear in time to avoid the progression of component damage. Prior to the use of SWAN, test engineers ran components at an overload condition to failure, and then tried to sort through the internal damage to determine which part failed first. SWANview's early detection ability allows test engineers to easily identify a primary failure, shortening both initial testing and post-test failure analysis times.
SWANview is based upon SWANTECH's patented Stress Wave Analysis (SWAN(TM)) technology, which is deployed in engineering test cell and industrial operating environments in condition monitoring and predictive maintenance applications. The simplicity of its user interface is a primary reason that Harley-Davidson first selected SWANview. The fact that the system proved successful in the first month of testing also distinguished SWAN from other technologies, which require extensive time for training and installation.
"Harley-Davidson is a remarkable company, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The company has reached this milestone through outstanding leadership and discipline," stated Joe Carpenter, president and CEO of SWANTECH. He added, "Harley-Davidson's product development and testing processes are rigorous. They ensure that current and future products continue to inspire the legendary loyalty and pride of ownership that characterize Harley-Davidson customers. We are proud to have proven the value of SWAN technology for Harley-Davidson's product development and testing requirements."
SWANTECH is dedicated to the innovation, design and development of diagnostic tools that detect and measure even slight shock and friction events that occur between contact surfaces in operating machinery. SWANTECH delivers the power of precise machine condition information with patented Stress Wave Analysis (SWAN(TM)) technology. SWAN detects Stress Wave Energy and enables the separation of these high-frequency stress waves from the much lower frequency range of operating machinery vibration and audible noise. This process detects flaws and problems well before other technologies including vibration and lubrication analysis and provides prognostic condition monitoring solutions that enable users to intervene before secondary machine damage or catastrophic failure occurs. SWANTECH solutions contribute to a lower total cost of operation and a greater return on assets managed.
