Woodward To Supply Fuel Injection Components for Pratt & Whitney's F135 Engine; Exclusive supplier of augmentor spray bar manifold assembly
ROCKFORD, Ill.--Nov. 20, 2002--Woodward Governor Company announced today that Pratt & Whitney (P&W) designated Woodward's Aircraft Engine Systems as the exclusive supplier of the augmentor spray bar manifold assembly on the F135 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The agreement increases the total estimated value of Woodward content on the engine to more than $125 million over the life of the program for U.S. and U.K. sales."Woodward has been producing aerospace components for Pratt & Whitney for more than 40 years now," said Tom Farmer, vice president of F135 engine programs, P&W. "They have proven repeatedly that they provide best value for many critical components. Pratt & Whitney depends on our supply chain to manufacture fuel injection components, and Woodward is a key source for not only the F135, but also the F119 engine powering the F-22 Raptor. Pratt & Whitney seeks the best value from industry to complement our own high technology manufacturing expertise. We look forward to providing unmatched maturity to the JSF program by developing a network of great companies like Woodward that demonstrate excellence in propulsion system components and services."
Woodward will supply the F135 augmentor spray bar manifold assembly to Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Connecticut. Earlier this year, the company was selected to supply the fuel and pilot nozzles for the engine. All components are designed, developed, and manufactured at Woodward's facility in Zeeland, Michigan. Deliveries to support the engine development program are slated for 2003; production deliveries are expected to start in 2007.
"Woodward has teamed with Pratt & Whitney bringing the technical expertise of both companies together to create an innovative, advanced combustion system for future military engines," said Phil Turner, Woodward vice-president and Aircraft Engine Systems general manager. "Our approach has positioned us to participate with Pratt & Whitney in the development of the most advanced fighter engine in aviation history."
About Pratt & Whitney
Pratt & Whitney, a United Technologies company , is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, industrial gas turbines and space propulsion systems. The Company is the propulsion system prime contractor for JSF. Its F135 propulsion system will power all versions of the F-35 JSF-CTOL (conventional takeoff and landing), CV (carrier variant), and STOVL (short takeoff/vertical landing). The first production configuration F135 goes to test in 2003, has its first flight in the F-35 in 2005, and enters production in 2007. The F135 is an evolution of the F119 engine powering the F-22 Raptor. Together, these engines will have more than one million engine flying hours of experience by the end of the F135's development phase in 2012. Up to 6,000 F-35 fighters could be produced for U.S. and international customers.
