GM Powertrain To Present Vortec Durability Awards At APBA World Championship Award Banquet

Vortec Power Team Operates Vortec HP3 8100 In Harsh, Real-World Conditions

PONTIAC, Mich. - GM Powertrain will present Vortec Durability Awards to three Vortec Power Team members at the American Powerboat Association (APBA) Offshore Racing World Championship awards banquet on Nov. 24, 2002, in Key West, Fla.

"APBA-Offshore has served as a unique testing ground this year to push our products to the limit in one of the harshest environments possible," said Rick Dunagan, executive director of OEM sales & marketing at GM Powertrain, "The Vortec HP3 8100 has performed very well, shattering old records and providing extraordinary durability."

The Vortec Durability Awards are composed of monetary prizes of $7,500 for first place, $5,000 for second place and $2,500 for third place.

"We challenged the Vortec Power Team members to run the engine for as many hours as possible to prove that durability," said Dunagan. "Because they each purchased a new GM tow vehicle, they also became eligible for the Vortec Durability Award for the team owner with the most race and practice hours on their Vortec HP3 engine. At the end of the race season, these engines will then be carefully analyzed by GM engineers to continually improve the breed of Vortec."

"This program highlights the natural link between owners who tow boats with their trucks, added Dunagan. "The common link is Vortec-uncompromised power by land or by sea. Powerboat racing also provides GM a natural venue to grow our powertrain marine engine business with a unique marketing opportunity to help sell GM vehicles through building the Vortec brand name. The Vortec Durability Award is testament to how GM Powertrain tests and validates Vortec engines in 'extreme environment' venues to ensure on-the-road durability for GM trucks, vans and SUVs."

The Vortec Power Team is composed of nine teams, including Kava Kava/Air Jamaica, High Noon Racing, Pier 57, Team Solarized, Team Fury, Team Scarab, UTZ Quality Foods, Rodriguez Group and Team Ettore.

The APBA World Championship Nov. 18-24 in Key West, Fla., is the final race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consists of eight offshore races at various venues with competitors in 10 race classes. All race weekends include a two-day format and are televised on cable network FOX Speed Channel. For additional information, log-on to www.gmvortec.com or www.apbaoffshore.com.
