USA International Speedway to Decide Final Standings
Fayetteville, GA (Nov.18, 2002) - With less than two weeks remaining until the season-ending showdown at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL, drivers in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series are ready to decide the 2002 National Championship. Jason Sarvis leads Steven Christian by 48 points with only the Hooters 300 presented by Jennie-O Turkey Store remaining to decide who takes home the $250,000 first-place prize.
Sarvis leads a group of seven drivers who have a chance of winning the championship with Brian Ross the final driver who could mathematically take home the crown. As those seven drivers ready for their opportunity to capture the title, nearly 35 other drivers are also positioning themselves for post-season bonuses. This year United Speed Alliance Racing will award nearly $1 million in point fund and awards purse to be given out at the 2002 USAR Hooters ProCup Series awards banquet in January.
While chasing the championship, Christian will also have to hold back a group of 10 drivers who could reach the runner-up spot and collect the $60,000 award. Among those drivers are Clay Rogers, who led the point standings until he was collected in an accident at Peach State Speedway, three-time defending Series champion Bobby Gill and veteran drivers Jay Fogleman and Hal Goodson who are tied for fifth-place. The four drivers are within 28 points of second place.
The difference in payout from second to fifth place is $32,000, and sixth place has a difference of $34,000 to the runner-up spot. While the top contenders are battling for solid finishes to get as many points as possible, the unique format of the USAR Hooters ProCup Championship Series has also created tight points races throughout the entire field.
Derrick Kelley enters the final race of the season in 40th-place which is the final position in the payoff with a prize of $7,000. Two drivers on the outside looking in are Alan Bigelow and Michael Strother. The duo sit 12 and 60 points out of 40th-place, respectively, and could still finish high enough in the standings for a payday at the end of the season.
