Azteca America Announces Exclusive Rights to the U.S. Broadcast of This Weekend's CART Race in Mexico City
MEXICO CITY, Nov. 15, 2002 TV Azteca, S.A. de C.V., a leading producer of Spanish language television programming, announced today that they have the exclusive broadcast rights to this weekend's CART race in Mexico City. The Azteca America Network will broadcast the race on every affiliate nationwide at 12 noon PST / 2 p.m. Central / 3 p.m. EST on Sunday, November 17.
This weekend's Gran Premio Telmex/Gigante in Mexico City not only represents the final race of the 2002 FedEx Championship Series season, it is the end of an era for CART, as the organization will be using a spec engine next year. Additionally, the Mexico City event will be the last time that some key drivers are competing.
"Azteca America is committed to bringing new and exciting programming to the U.S. marketplace, and this weekend's CART race is no exception," said Luis Echarte, President and CEO, Azteca America. "We are thrilled to offer U.S. audiences the chance to see one of the most exciting CART races this year -- exclusively on our network."
This is the first time in over 20 years that CART is racing in Mexico City. The last time was 1981, in the same Hermanos Rodruiguez Stadium, when Bobby Unser won the checkered flag.
Over a quarter-million fans are expected to view the event and will be especially focused on three Mexican drivers -- Michel Jourdain Jr., Mario Dominguez and Luis "Chapulin" Diaz. There's also strong competition throughout the line-up for runner-up positions, not to mention Cristiano da Matta's chance to tie for eight wins in a season.
