Chevy Qualifying Notes - Homestead, Nov. 15
TERRY LABONTE, NO. 5 KELLOGG'S CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "We picked up a little
bit. Our car was really loose in practice and we've been trying to get it
tightened up. We got a little bit better, but there's still a lot left if we
can get it right. So we just have to work on it and get it ready to race."
STEVE PARK, NO. 1 PENNZOIL CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "We're really satisfied
with that. We ran the same time we did in practice. But the race fans need
to know it's hotter out here right now. So just to back up how we did in
practice, was good. This whole Pennzoil team did a great job from where we
started to where we ended up, we made a lot of gain. We've got to crawl
before we walk, and right now we're crawling really fast."
ROBBY GORDON, NO. 31 CINGULAR WIRELESS CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "We've
struggled all weekend long so far just putting power down. It's been very
loose coming off the corners and we haven't been able to hardly touch the
throttle at all. I'm disappointed for the Cingular Wireless team. But, maybe
that's a good sign. Normally we get tight when we untape it, so maybe we'll
get good in the race."
JEFF GREEN, NO. 30 AOL CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "As much as we gained
yesterday is as much as we've gained today with this heat. This Miami sun
wears it out a little bit. So we don't have a lot of grip. It's not real
good. I'm not too happy with that. There's a lot of guys who will run slower
too. We've just got to be better."
DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 8 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "I'm real proud
of this team. Tony (Eury) Sr. and Tony Jr. did a great job in practice today
to get the car dialed in. That's why the car runs so good. There's a good
handle on the car. It's the same car we ran last week (in Phoenix) and we
felt so good about it that we brought it here. Hopefully it'll turn out and
get us a win.
"The set-ups are real, real similar. And the car drives so good, we figured
we might as well bring it. I think we've made a good choice. The car was
real good in practice and real good in my qualifying lap. I got a little
loose down in (turns) three and four and it cost me a little bit. But that
was a good lap. I'm pretty happy. We're all working real good together and
it seems to be paying off. There's a lot of hard work going into getting the
car dialed in. And me and Tony Jr. and Tony Sr. have been getting our heads
together and trying to get something good. And it's really working out. This
last half of the season has been real good for us. This car ran last week
and it was about this good in qualifying. It's just about the same set-up so
hopefully we'll run up front." Note: more to follow

JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "We've made some great
adjustments. In practice it was really hard to find how to make the exits
tighten up and not affect the car anywhere else. You spend almost 50 percent
of the time in the corners here. Chad (Knaus, crew chief) made some great
calls on the car, and hopefully we'll have a good starting spot here. It
looks like the weather is going to cool down and the times are going to pick
up. But we're starting strong so far with the Lowe's Monte Carlo and we'll
have a good day on Sunday."
KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 29 GM GOODWRENCH CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "We're just
loose. It's just one of those deals on qualifying today, but hopefully we'll
be good on Sunday."
JOE NEMECHEK, NO. 25 UAW/DELPHI CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO: "That was a good lap.
It was a little bit quicker than in practice. I've got to thank all these
guys on the UAW/Delphi Chevy team. They've been working real hard and giving
me some excellent race cars here at the end of the year and we're just
trying to show it. I got a little bit loose - just like everybody - on exit,
and gave up a little bit of time there. I couldn't quite get the power down
when I wanted to and it was just trying to spin the back tires. But we've
got a killer engine this week and we're starting up front."
(ON SIGNING WITH HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS FOR 2003) "Yeah, we got all that taken
care of this week on Wednesday and got all signed up. Peter (Sospenzo, crew
chief) is on board. We've got a really good group of guys there and some
great sponsors. We're just getting things turned around right now and next
year is going to be a awesome year."
POST-QUALFIYING COMMENTS FROM DALE EARNHARDT JR., NO. 8 BUDWEISER CHEVROLET
MONTE CARLO - (Qualified 2nd):
"It was a great run for us. I'm real happy with the team and real proud of
the guys. There was a lot of work in practice to get the car comfortable. It
was a great lap. It's frustrating to see a lap get beat because it was such
a great lap compared to most people's. But they've done a great job the last
half of the season. He's a worthy competitor (Kurt Busch, pole winner) when
it comes to qualifying here lately. It's a lot better than we've run here in
the past and the lap was real good. It was real comfortable down in (turns)
one and two and a little bit free through (turns) three and four. Hopefully
we'll get a good run on Sunday. We're doing pretty good the last half of the
year."

DALE EARNHARDT JR. Con't.
(HOW IMPORTANT IS THE POLE?) "Poles are good; but more so for the team. I've
already got my pole this year. The only reason it's important to me is so
that we can be in the Bud Shootout. So, once you get one, you're pretty
content. But it does a lot for the team."
(WHILE ALWAYS TRYING TO IMPROVE AND MOVE UP, WHAT RUNG ARE YOU ON IN THE
LADDER?) "We've had a great second-half of the year. The first half wasn't
too bad either, but we've gotten more top fives and more top 10's than we
did last year. I feel like we're a great team and we're where we need to be.
You can walk up and down the garage and see where each team can improve here
and there.
"Our flat track program, specifically, has gotten a lot better since we
started. We came here to a lot of these places like Homestead and New
Hampshire and really were not competitive at all. This year, we've been very
competitive. We've been competitive at Bristol and Martinsville. I'm glad to
see improvement and I've seen quite a bit of it. Hopefully, we can be real
consistent next year like we have the last half of this season and do what
we can in the points.
"When it's your year, it's your year. I think it comes down to having some
luck and having all things going your way. We've got new bodies for next
year to fool with. They may throw us a curve ball; they may not. A lot of it
just falls down to whether all the pieces of the puzzle fall together.
Hopefully that'll happen for us next year."
(HOW DO YOU RACE TONY STEWART AND MARK MARTIN IN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS
RACE?) "I don't know. If Tony Stewart of Mark Martin comes around me and
they're faster - I don't care what race it is - you just kind of get out of
the way. They do the same for you. I try to give all those guys as much room
as I can. But when it comes down to the end of the race, you try to win."
(ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO SORT OF FADING INTO THE BACKGROUND FOR A LITTLE
WHILE DURING THE BREAK?) "I'm looking forward to the off-season just the
same as anybody. I can't wait to spend some time with the family during
Christmas and get back to my friends for New Years and all that. I'm really
looking forward to see what these new bodies are going to do for us and get
it all rolling at the speedway tests and stuff like that. It'll be over and
done before you know it. The off-season doesn't last too long."
