CTS to Supply OCXOs for Datum's StarLoc II Precision GPS Time and Frequency Reference Product

ELKHART, Ind.--Nov. 5, 2002--CTS Corporation , today announced that it has been selected as the primary supplier of oven controlled crystal oscillators (OCXOs) for Datum Inc.'s StarLoc II(R) Timing Module. StarLoc II(R) is a precision GPS time and frequency reference unit in a small, low-cost package. With StarLoc II, it is possible to reliably and economically achieve the precision time and frequency synchronization mandated upgrade, required for E911 location systems and their high-speed digital networks.
StarLoc II combines the long-term stability available from a GPS receiver with the short-term stability and reliability of an OCXO to produce an extremely precise time and frequency reference. During system operation, the GPS receiver disciplines the crystal oscillator. If the system loses GPS disciplining, the crystal oscillator alone will provide the timing and frequency reference functions for a predetermined time duration. A Datum spokesperson stated, "The small size, superb performance and cost-effective attributes of the CTS precision-disciplined OCXO were characteristics critical to the successful design of the Datum StarLoc II reference unit." Datum, with its StarLoc II product, has been awarded contracts for the E911 location system. Each Datum module requires one OCXO, which CTS supplies.
This segment of the wireless infrastructure market is projected to grow rapidly due to the FCC requirements that mandate the capability to pinpoint the source location of cellular-based 911 emergency calls.
"We are very excited about this new E911 application that will utilize CTS' extensive quartz crystal oscillator technologies and worldwide manufacturing capabilities. We look forward to working with Datum on this opportunity which requires rapid deployment," said Donald Schwanz, CTS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
