Toyota Reports October Sales-They Stink
TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 1 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported monthly sales of 135,307 vehicles, a decrease of 20.6 percent compared to last year's record-shattering October. Calendar- year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 1,478,377, an increase of 1.3 percent compared to the same period last year."The last 12 months ... and especially last October ... were an anomaly for industry sales," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "The tailwind we've all enjoyed is dissipating. The industry is beginning to settle into business as usual, where sales will again be driven by quality and value."
The Toyota Division recorded October sales of 119,273 units, a decrease of 20.4 percent. The Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) enjoyed best-ever October sales totaling 8,879, an increase of 14.8 percent. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan also posted record October sales with 1,775 units sold, up 8.2 percent and 34.2 percent for the year. The Land Cruiser full-size SUV recorded 616 sales, an increase of 6.9 percent.
Toyota Camry sales remained steady at 33,062, down 8.6 percent from last October's strong performance. Camry CYTD sales stand at 370,946, up 13.0 percent compared to the same period last year.
The Lexus Division reported sales of 16,034 vehicles, a decrease of 22.0 percent. Lexus CYTD sales total 192,155, up 5.5 percent compared to the same period last year.
Sales of North American-built vehicles made up 60.8 percent of total October sales. There were 27 selling days compared to 26 last October.
