Pontiac Pace Car Contest Enters Final Lap
October 31, 2002DETROIT - The field has been narrowed and the white flag is out as the finalists race to the finish line in the Pontiac Grand Prix NASCAR Pace Car Promotion. From a total of more than 32,000 entries, five fan-designed pace cars have been selected for a final on-line vote with the winner to be unveiled at the 2003 Daytona 500.
In the first phase of the contest, fans were asked to submit their own unique design for the Daytona 500 Grand Prix pace car using a special set of on-line tools made possible by a partnership among Pontiac, NASCAR.com, America Online and Electronic Arts. Now, in the second phase, fans can select their favorite design from the "final five" by visiting pontiacracing.com through Nov. 26, 2002.
"We've really been blown away by the way the fans have jumped on this opportunity to make a little racing history," said Larry Pryg, marketing manager for the Pontiac Grand Prix. "First, we had a tremendous response with thousands of incredibly creative designs that, frankly, were very difficult to narrow down to just five finalists. And when those five designs were put back on the web for the fans' final selection, we had more than 5,000 votes in the first hour."
All five finalists will be Pontiac's guests at the Daytona 500 on Feb. 16, 2003. The winner will be announced in a special pre-race ceremony and will receive a special victory lap around the speedway driven by Vin Diesel, star of this summer's smash action movie, "xXx."
In addition to unveiling the new pace car at the Daytona 500, Pontiac race teams will be premiering a new version of the Grand Prix race car based on the design and styling of the 2004 Grand Prix, which will be available in Pontiac dealer showrooms next spring.
