Vortec Power Team Captures Two First and Second Places
PONTIAC, Mich. - The Vortec Power Team captured two first and two second place finishes in high-speed boats powered by the Vortec HP3 8100 V8 engine at the 2002 American Power Boat Association Offshore Race Series Freeport, Grand Bahama National Championships Oct. 18-20.
The Vortec Power Team is comprised of nine teams, including Vortec Extreme, High Noon Racing, Pier 57, Team Solarized, Team Fury, Team Scarab, UTZ Quality Foods, Rodriguez Group and Team Ettore.
In the Super Vee Light Single class, Team Fury captured first place and 164 points in a Vortec-powered Phantom powerboat with a time of 40:56 at 74.69 mph.
"We propped so we could run wide open the whole race," said Steve Delaney, Team Fury driver.
Team Vortec Extreme placed second in a Vortec-powered Extreme powerboat with a time of 41:27 and 73.77 mph. Team Vortec Extreme earned 153 points.
In the Super Vee Light Twin class, UTZ Quality Foods captured first place and 162 points in a Vortec-powered Fountain boat with a time of 42:47 at 86.19 mph.
"The engines have been awesome-trouble free," said Matt Rice, driver for UTZ Quality Foods. "GM has been real supportive. We'd do it again in a heart beat."
Pier 57/Stainless Marine came in second place in a Vortec-powered Fountain powerboat with a time of 42:60 at 85.77 mph. Pier 57 earned 151 points.
The National Championship in Freeport, Grand Bahama Oct. 18-20 was the seventh race in the 2002 APBA Offshore Race Series, which consists of eight offshore races at various venues.
Competitors in 10 race classes will continue to vie for points leading to the World Championship Nov. 18-24 in Key West, Fla.
