F-1 2002 Recap
LONDON - The AP published this race-by-race synopsis of the 2002 Formula One season:
March 3 - Australian Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher avoids a first-lap crash that eliminates Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher. Juan Pablo Montoya salvages second for Williams. Kimi Raikkonen, taking over for Mika Hakkinen at McLaren, is third.
March 17 - Malaysian Grand Prix
Ralf Schumacher gets the victory after his brother and Montoya collide on the first turn. Montoya gets a "drive-through" penalty and finishes second. Michael Schumacher damages front wing, gets it replaced, and comes in third.
March 31 - Brazilian Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher uses the 2002 Ferrari model for the first time and wins by less than a second over Ralf. McLaren's David Coulthard takes third. Montoya and Michael Schumacher have another first-lap clash.
April 14 - San Marino Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher leads a 1-2 finish for Ferrari, the first in 20 years at Imola. Ralf Schumacher is a well-beaten third. Benetton's Jenson Button has his third consecutive race in the points.
April 28 - Spanish Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher easily wins his third consecutive race in the 2002 Ferrari, but Barrichello is left on the starting line with gearbox troubles and fails to start. Montoya is second and Coulthard third.
May 12 - Austrian Grand Prix
Barrichello starts from pole position, leads virtually the entire race and is ordered to slow down by Ferrari team directors. Michael Schumacher reluctantly takes the victory but pushes Barrichello to the top step of the podium amid boos and criticism.
May 26 - Monaco Grand Prix
Coulthard starts from the pole and wins for the second time in three years after being left on the starting line last year. Schumacher takes second ahead of brother Ralf.
June 9 - Canadian Grand Prix
The older Schumacher coasts to his sixth victory in eight races. Coulthard finishes second. Montoya of BMW-Williams begins a run of five straight pole positions but spins off.
June 23 - European Grand Prix
Barrichello wins without being asked to pull aside for Michael Schumacher, who takes second. Kimi Raikkonen takes third for McLaren. Later in the week, Ferrari is fined $1 million for its Austrian Grand Prix actions on the podium. However, the team is not fined for ordering Barrichello to slow down.
July 7 - British Grand Prix
Another win for Michael Schumacher. Rubens Barrichello starts from the back after stalling on the grid and still finishes second. Montoya is third in a Williams. Arrows barely make it to the starting line with financial difficulties.
July 21 - French Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher clinches his fifth world title, winning his 61st race and eighth of the season taking advantage of a mistake by Raikkonen. Six races still remain. The Finn goes wide on a turn with five laps left and takes second. Coulthard is third. Arrows miss the race, making a halfhearted attempt at qualifying.
July 28 - German Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher wins for the ninth time. Montoya winds up second, his best result after five straight poles. Ralf Schumacher is third ahead of Barrichello. Former two-time world champion Mika Hakkinen retires officially after stepping away on a "sabbatical" after last season.
August 18 - Hungarian Grand Prix
Barrichello leads a 1-2 as Ferrari clinches the constructors title. Ralf Schumacher takes third. Arrows miss their second race.
Sept. 1 - Belgian Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher breaks the season victory record with his 10th win, taking the checkered flag on his favorite track. Barrichello is second with Montoya third.
Sept. 15 - Italian Grand Prix
Ferraris are 1-2 again as Barrichello wins with Michael Schumacher second as he avoids overtaking Barrichello near the finish. Eddie Irvine gets an unexpected third for Jaguar.
Sept. 29 - U.S. Grand Prix
Michael Schumacher leads but gives Barrichello the victory after the German tries to have both cars finish in a dead heat. Coulthard takes third and the Williams cars bump each other out of contention.
Oct. 13 - Japanese Grand Prix
With talk of possible changes in F1 surrounding the race, Michael Schumacher wins for the 11th time and 64th of his career. He slows to allow Barrichello to come close but not pass. Raikkonen get third but Montoya's fourth give him third in the season standings behind the two Ferrari drivers.
