Motorola Leads in Automotive Telematics Applications
MINNEAPOLIS--Oct. 16, 2002--According to a recent study conducted by Telematics Research Group (TRG), Motorola holds the largest market share for embedded microprocessor units used in vehicle telematics applications. Motorola's estimated current worldwide market share is nearly ninety percent, according to the study. In the US there are an estimated 4 million telematics-enabled cars and light trucks on the road with many of them being OnStar and utilizing components from Motorola. Today, about 80 different models of cars and light trucks sold in the US are available with telematics. Telematics is standard on many luxury trim packages and is increasingly available on SUVs and light trucks.
Telematics consist of a control unit (TCU) that combines a microprocessor unit (MPU) and other components, with a GPS receiver and phone module. According to TRG's study, TCUs based on Motorola MPUs hold the largest share of the market although various others are competing for a piece of this growing market including Hitachi.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Worldwide Microprocessor Unit (MPU) Market Share for Telematics ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yearly Sales 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Worldwide TM Sales (#K) 4.3 19 85 242 902 1,741 2,318 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Motorola Share (%) 100 100 96.8 95.3 95.4 94.5 89.2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hitachi Share (%) 2.0 3.2 2.6 2.6 5.3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Others Share (%) 1.2 1.5 2.1 2.8 5.6 ----------------------------------------------------------------------
According to TRG, telematics is often purchased for safety and security purposes but is increasingly sought for its built-in communications or the ability to receive location-based services such as news, weather reports, or traffic information.
"By the end of the decade, nearly three quarters of all vehicles sold in the US will have some type of telematics," according to Dr. Egil Juliussen, principal technology analyst with TRG. "Worldwide annual sales of telematics-enabled cars and light trucks will reach 27 million by the end of the decade."

Methodology
To size the worldwide market for telematics TRG has compiled estimates of telematics-enabled vehicle sales by OEM then identified the major components used in most systems. The resulting data becomes the basis for TRG's market share estimates. These market share estimates do not include stand-alone navigation or GPS systems.
