Conti Temic microelectronic GmbH Selects I-Logix' Statemate MAGNUM and Rhapsody in MicroC Tool Chain for Complete Model-Based Development
ANDOVER, Mass.--Oct. 15, 2002--I-Logix today announced that Conti Temic Product Line Body Electronics will utilize the Statemate MAGNUM(TM) and Rhapsody(R) in MicroC integrated tool chain to standardize model-based development for Electronic Control Units (ECUs). Conti Temic microelectronic GmbH selected the integrated tool chain to graphically specify their designs, improve communication within their development team and with customers, reduce time to market through component re-use and reduce costs by validating systems and software designs up front prior to implementation. The I-Logix visual application development tool chain provides Conti Temic with a development process from requirements to code, ensuring their applications are complete and accurate.
Conti Temic Body Electronics committed to the I-Logix model-based approach due to the complexity and diversity of body control ECUs. Using Statemate MAGNUM, Conti Temic system engineers create formal requirements specifications. Conti Temic Body Electronics is then able to test their models in a virtual prototyping environment, ensuring that their ECU models are error free. The system behavior is validated as an integral part of the design process, before anything is built. Conti Temic is able to execute, or simulate, the design - either complete or partially complete - prior to implementation. Analyzing their specifications up front, Conti Temic ensures behavior is correct and captures test data that will be used later to test the implementation. Due to the critical nature of many Body Electronics Systems, they plan to implement Statemate MAGNUM ModelChecker(TM) to ensure that the design meets systems requirements. The automatic debugging functionality confirms that the specification models are accurate and complete.
Conti Temic benefits from the ability to automatically generate high quality target code directly from Rhapsody in MicroC. In addition, Conti Temic is able to easily capture and re-use features or functions throughout the development process with the Statemate MAGNUM Library feature, and automatically generate documentation from the completed specification model.
Conti Temic embraced the I-Logix integrated tool chain in order to meet rigid design demands for ECUs. Working with supplier requirements, Conti Temic is able to visually express their systems / functionality and ensure, up-front in the design process, that the product will meet the specifications. In many cases, Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) who also use the Statemate MAGNUM product provide Conti Temic actual requirements models. The use of a standard tool between OEM and supplier greatly eases the miscommunication common within the automotive industry.
"In addition to facilitating communication, Conti Temic Body Electronics is able to quickly make changes and ensure their designs are solid when issues arise in ECU integration, functionality is changed late in the game, cost reductions are mandated or variant derivation has to be incorporated and validated within the product," said Andreas Nagl, Software-Engineering, Conti Temic Product Line Body Electronics. "Due to the complexity of our products, the synchronization effort for requirements, analysis / design models, code and test cases increased exponentially with conventional static CASE tools. The Statemate MAGNUM and Rhapsody in MicroC tool chain, unlike static CASE tools, allows us to 'feel' the systems behavior, make changes on the fly, validate our design, generate code and conduct tests much more quickly. The flexibility of Statemate MAGNUM / Rhapsody in MicroC allows us to reuse existing functionalities written in C - so we follow a smooth, evolutionary path to model-based development without the risks and overhead associated with a revolutionary paradigm / tool shift."
Statemate MAGNUM is a graphical design, simulation and prototyping tool for the rapid development of complex embedded systems. It enables engineers to graphically capture their system requirements, specifications and designs using a combination of the Unified Modeling Language(TM) (UML(TM)) and traditional functional design notations. The graphical models captured in Statemate MAGNUM are simulated on the host computer allowing errors in the requirements and specifications to be discovered early in the process when they are inexpensive to fix. Statemate MAGNUM automatically generates documentation, prototype code, and test vectors, and enables corporate re-use of key systems components.
Rhapsody in MicroC is a visual software design and development environment for microcontrollers. Used either stand-alone or in conjunction with Statemate MAGNUM, software designs are captured graphically and validated up front before anything is built and then, based on user defined parameters, full functional production quality C Code is automatically generated.
