Visteon Unveils TACNET™ -- A Single Solution Helping Law Enforcement Save Lives
The name TACHNET has been in use by The Auto Channel for more than 5 years.<P>
DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 7, 2002 -- Today, law enforcement agencies and emergency response teams are looking for ways to improve communications, efficiency and in-vehicle safety. Visteon Corporation , a leader in automotive systems integration, combined its automotive expertise with law enforcement industry leaders to design and develop an integrated solution delivering interoperability, reduced clutter, improved efficiency and safety, called TACNET™.
"Customers tell us interoperability and officer safety are priorities for law enforcement agencies," said Pete Pestillo, Visteon's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We've developed a single solution to improve inter-agency communication ensuring a more coordinated response to emergency situations, thus helping law enforcement officials save lives."
TACNET, a single command-and-control module, dramatically reduces the number of devices installed in the police car interior. The system integrates lights, siren, radios, radar, patrol video, and AM/FM radio functions in a centralized in-dash control screen. In fact, the unit allows simultaneous transmission over multiple radios, prioritizes radio signals allowing agencies to communicate with each other, while reducing the number of radios in the passenger compartment. TACNET also supports complete mobile data functionality.
The National Center for Statistics and Analysis's Special Crash Investigations Program discovered several cases in which the laptop computers (used for generating reports, etc.) have caused injuries to police officers. Other independent studies show items mounted in the passenger compartment can interfere with air bag deployment. Visteon's integrated solution removes objects from the air bag deployment path and minimizes the potential for service equipment to become in-vehicle projectiles during a crash.
The integrated system's open architecture features plug-and-play expansion capability. This feature makes the system upgradable, protecting public investment and the electronic life of a police car. The system uses two computers, one for critical functions like radios, lights and sirens, and a 700 MHz Intel Celeron, with a 40GB hard drive for other data driven applications like generating reports.
In addition to the technical solution of hardware and software, Visteon offers a Customer Care Program ensuring support from knowledgeable people to address the specific needs of each customer from structuring of funding proposals to installation, training and service. Visteon's Customer Care Program is designed to ensure law enforcement officers achieve maximum benefit and return from TACNET.
Visteon developed the integrated system and built alliances with recognized leaders in the law enforcement electronics field including Aether Systems, Federal Signal, M/A-Com and Padcom. Together, these companies are ensuring delivery of an integrated, high-quality "Command-and-Control" system.
