FARMINGTON HILLS - Shannon MacMillan, U.S. Soccer Women's National Team superstar visits youth soccer tournament to inspire the thousands of Michigan soccer athletes at Founders Park for the fourth annual Chevy Cup this Saturday from 1-3 p.m.

MacMillan - a U.S. Soccer Women's National Team gold and silver Olympic medalist, founding member of the Women's United Soccer Association, 1999 World Cup Champion and current midfielder with the San Diego Spirit - began playing youth soccer in California.

"Participation in the Chevy Cup tournament has doubled with more than 130 teams from all over Michigan," said Tom Faro, Michigan State Youth Soccer Association executive director. "What makes this event so unique is it gives young players and teams who would not normally have the opportunity the experience and atmosphere of tournament-type play." "Having a role model like Shannon MacMillan on hand and the interactive soccer-themed games of the Chevrolet Festival is icing on the cake."

"The Chevy Cup in Michigan is not about winning or losing, it's about kids playing soccer and reaping the benefits that fun, team-oriented play, exercise and skills development can bring. The growth of the event speaks for itself and we're honored to do our part to support area youth," said Brian Boyd, Chevrolet promotion manager.

Chevrolet has been a sponsor of the Michigan Youth Soccer Association (USYS) as part of a U.S. Youth Soccer marketing partnership intended to enhance soccer opportunities for more than 3 million youth soccer players and their families since 1997. Chevy also sponsors each of the 55 youth soccer state associations that make up USYS. Forty-one of these state associations host a Chevy Cup tournament.

The Michigan Chevy Cup is held at the Farmington Founders Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. More than 2,500 youth players are expected to participate and enjoy the Chevrolet Soccer Festival.
