SAN GABRIEL VALLEY MAYORS TO COMPETE
AT IRWINDALE DRAGSTRIP - - SAT. OCT 12
2002 Edition Of Event Will See Mayors Really Racing Each Other

Irwindale, Calif. - - Irwindale Mayor Mark Breceda and Irwindale Speedway General Manager Robert DeFazio have announced that the third annual "Mayor's Cup Challenge" would be held on Saturday afternoon, October 12, 2002 at the Irwindale Dragstrip.

This year's edition of the "Cup" will see Mayors from all over the San Gabriel Valley drag racing each other mano-a-mano for the glory of their individual cities. Mayor Breceda will personally challenge all the other mayors in the Valley to take part in a real street legal drag race.

In the past two versions of this event, each of the mayors made a personal appearance, took a bow on the starting line, and then stood back as "their car" (a racing car emblazoned with their city's name) raced around the track (with a pro driver behind the wheel) while they watched from the stands.

Not any more, this watching stuff … Mayor Breceda and all the other mayoral participants will be racing … Not sittin' and wishin' that they were.

Constituents from all the cities represented at the Irwindale Dragstrip on October 12 would be well-advised to be there to cheer for their own city's mayor in this major battle of the boroughs. There's no admission charge to watch these public servants try to blow one another off in hot NHRA-style competition.

The cars that the mayors will compete in are specially-prepared 2002 Ford Focus ZX-5's. "These neat ZX-5's will 'have it all'," said Advantage Ford's GM, Mike Wedmore. "We really wanted to 'pour it on' with this ZX-5, it's really a great model to have this kind of fun with … I can't wait to see the fan's reactions to these cool creations." Advantage Ford, located in nearby Duarte, California, has been the official supplier of cars and trucks to the Irwindale Speedway since it opened in March of 1999.

The Irwindale Speedway complex, located on Live Oak Avenue at the 605 Freeway in Irwindale, comprises a 6,500-seat NASCAR twin-oval track and an NHRA Street Legal Drag Strip. The facility is in use over 200 days a year with racing, testing, racing and driving schools, special "tent" sales, new vehicle introductions, car club events, TV-film-commercial shoots, police-fire-emergency personnel training and more.
