IBM Unveils New Business -- IBM Engineering & Technology Services

    ARMONK, N.Y.--Oct. 7, 2002--

New York Stock Exchange, Medtronic, Sony Computer Entertainment, Minolta Among New Division's First Customers

    IBM today unveiled a new services business -- IBM Engineering & Technology Services -- focused on helping companies across a variety of industries design innovative electronic products.
    The new business brings together IBM's know-how and capabilities in IT services and advanced technology, offering customers a wealth of engineering talent and access to IBM's vast intellectual property, including designs ranging from complex chips to entire systems.
    To help propel this new business, IBM has shifted more than 700 design engineers worldwide into the unit and expects the number to increase to more than 1,000 by next year.
    "Our value proposition can be summed up in a single word -- access," said Pat Toole, general manager of IBM Engineering & Technology Services. "We're taking a skills-on-demand approach to bringing customers top-tier engineers who are highly experienced in wrapping the appropriate intellectual property into a solution. We also will be a portal into other parts of IBM, such as financing, research and development and consultants who innovate, integrate and accelerate time-to-market."
    The deep technical know-how of IBM Engineering & Technology Services spans a number of industry segments including IT, communications, defense, aerospace, consumer electronics and automotive, where IBM already enjoys deep customer relationships.
    Medtronic, Inc. is one of IBM Engineering & Technology Services' first customers. IBM worked with the Minneapolis-based company to design its Medtronic CareLink programmer, a tool that enables clinicians to review data about implantable cardiac devices in real time.
    "As a leading medical technology company, we're focused on finding new ways to integrate the most advanced technology into our products, knowing dramatic advances in this field contribute to higher quality, more affordable health care," said Stan Myrum, vice president of CRM Operations and Shared Development, Medtronic, Inc. "Given the constantly-increasing complexity of computer technology, we have partnered with IBM to help accomplish this goal."
    The New York Stock Exchange, Sony Computer Entertainment, Consumer Direct Link, Inc. and Minolta also are among IBM Engineering & Technology Services' many customers.
    New technology service offerings from this new IBM business fall into four basic categories:

- Business Solutions: business process optimization, such as intellectual asset management; e-design including verification, web hosting and enablement; technology migration including consulting or training for SOI technology and manufacturing consulting;
- Technology Optimization: silicon optimization, circuits, arrays; frequency and power tradeoffs; yield analysis and chip/module/board optimization;
- System Solutions: component and platform development; system level optimization, plus hardware/software integration and test;
- Technology Outsourcing: including semiconductor fabrication operation services and full product development mission outsourcing for chip and system solutions.
