Jenkins Clinches First Track Championship on NAPA Night at HMS
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (October 5, 2002) The O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury
Late Models crowned Shane Jenkins of Statesboro, GA as 2002 HMS Late Model
Champion as he won the 50-lap feature race over Skeeter Godbee of Pembroke,
GA coming in second. In Legends Cars action, Jonathan Haidon of Hilton
Head, SC was victorious outpacing Clay Hair of Mt. Pleasant, NC and Billy
Tysinger of Hardeeville, SC. Johnny Brown from Bluffton, SC and Don Dean
of Sheldon, SC won the Mini Stock and Xtreme Stock Car features
respectively. Billy Gorman from Hollywood, SC won the Coastal Medical
Associates Street Stocks race and Glenn Mappus of Ridgeville, SC claimed
the crown as Street Stock Track Champion. Peter Frank of Bluffton, SC and
Timmy Padgett of Hardeeville, SC picked up wins in the Road Warrior class.
Polesitter Tom Haidon of Hilton Head, SC blistered the field for the first
23 laps of the race in the O.C Welch Ford- Lincoln- Mercury Late Models
feature while Tommy Porter, Jr. of Savannah, GA reeled him back in to take
over the spot at the mid point of the event. Shane Jenkins, with eyes on
the track championship, moved up through the field taking the lead away
with 10 laps remaining. Haidon had some handling problems with the car due
to a broken power steering pump and banged fenders with both Porter, Jr.
and Skeeter Godbee of Pembroke, GA in the final moments of the
race. Jenkins held on for both the win and the track championship. During
post race interviews, Jenkins was asked about his feelings toward next
weeks Florida Pro Series coming to town and taking on the local Late Model
drivers, Jenkins replied "bring it on, we'll show 'em how its done in our
house!"
In Legends Cars racing action, an excited Jonathan Haidon of Hilton Head,
SC jumped on the hood of his Legends Car in true NASCAR Winston Cup fashion
as he celebrated his victory. Haidon came into the night as points leader
in the Semi-Pro division and with one point race remaining, has an
excellent shot at becoming the HMS track champion. Clay Hair of Mt.
Pleasant, NC came across second narrowly ahead of Billy Tysinger of
Hardeeville, SC and National Young Lions Champion Jimmy Lang of Bluffton, SC.
NAPA Auto Parts brought out four delivery trucks for a special NAPA race
only to have it spoiled by the Late Model #3 car, driven by Dusty Lee
Garrus of Ridgeville, SC who blew by the delivery trucks with his NAPA Auto
Parts Chevrolet.
Next Saturday night, October 12th, the Hardeeville Motor Speedway will be
back in action as the Florida Pro Series brings the best drivers in Late
Model action from Florida including all time world record holder of
victories, Dick Anderson, onto the 1/3 mile high banked oval to compete
