New 3M Acrylic Plus Tapes Raise the Bar on Weatherstrip Tape Attachment

ST. PAUL, Minn.--Oct. 2, 2002--In response to customer requests for a more robust product, 3M Automotive has released a new line of acrylic tapes offering significant customer benefits.
According to the company, 3M designed its new 3M Acrylic Plus Sealing Tape ST 1200 to achieve a higher level of performance for attaching primary and secondary weatherstrip seals than its predecessor. The new product, which meets or exceeds current OEM specifications, provides:

-- Improved wet out.
-- Better initial and long-term adhesion to a wider variety of paint systems.
-- Better seal conformability over hem flanges and uneven sheet metal.
-- Improved seal-attachment aesthetics because of its black color and low elongation.
-- Robust performance when exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
-- Reduced launch, rework and warranty issues.

3M says this more versatile and robust product will reduce sealing systems costs.
3M Acrylic Plus Sealing Tape ST 1200 uses a more aggressive adhesive with higher initial tack and quicker adhesion build than the original 3M Acrylic Foam Tapes. The new tape technology increases wet out, holding power and conformability while maintaining core strength and bond-line integrity. The tape's black construction improves bond-line aesthetics and increases design flexibility.
"The product was developed in response to the industry's demand for greater reliability and lower systems cost. This new technology will serve as the platform for our future tape advancements," said Jim Malloy, business development manager, 3M Automotive Attachment Products.
3M's acrylic foam tapes, introduced in 1978, have been widely adopted in the automotive industry, replacing mechanical attachment of secondary and primary weatherstrip seals. In addition to simplifying installation, reducing weight and removing potential sites of corrosion, tape attachment -- as part of an overall comprehensive noise reduction packages -- helps reduce noise and provides a better seal against wind, dust and moisture.
