NOTES OF INTEREST: The Food World 300, the 40th ARCA RE/MAX Series
event at Talladega, is the longest RE/MAX Series race on the schedule at
300 miles. In addition, the $264,943 in posted awards for the event is a
record Talladega/ARCA RE/MAX Series purse. In the 39 races already held
at Talladega, 17 have been won from the pole including last year when
Bobby Gerhart led 105 of 113 laps. Gerhart is the only former Talladega
winner entered among 55 entrants. In fact, among the drivers entered,
only Gerhart, Frank Kimmel, Bobby Bowsher, Mark Gibson, Chad Blount and
Jason Jarrett represent themselves as former RE/MAX Series winners
anywhere. Cedar Bluff, Alabama driver Tina Gordon, injured in May of
this year at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, will make her return to competition
for the first time since her accident. Current point leader Frank
Kimmel, who has never won at Talladega, leads rookie Chad Blount by 515
points heading into Talladega. If Kimmel leaves Talladega with the same
points margin, or greater, he will have clinched the 2002 ARCA RE/MAX
Series national championship, his 4th in 5 seasons. The outcome of the
Food World 300 will determine this year’s Bill France Triple Crown
winner. The prestigious award, representative of ARCA’s extremely
diverse schedule, is an amalgamation of points from 3 very different
tracks – Talladega, the Salem Speedway short-track and the Springfield
IL dirt-mile. Kimmel leads Blount by 45 points for the honor. Talladega
is one of two venues for the ARCA RE/MAX Series that mandates the use of
carburetor restrictor plates - the other being Daytona Int'l Speedway.
