Robblee makes return to Super Series victory lane
Don Thomson claims second consecutive CASCAR National championship
LONDON, ON - On Sunday afternoon at Delaware Speedway, Steve Robblee earned
his first CASCAR Super Series feature win since September of 1993. By
winning the season-ending Great Canadian 300, the Havoline-Texaco Grogan
Ford driver tied two-time National champion Peter Gibbons atop the all-time
career wins list with 17 CASCAR feature victories.
Robblee, who recently collected his third straight CASCAR CARQUEST
Sportsman series championship, has not been a regular on the Super Series
tour during the past few seasons, but is the winningest driver in the
history of the London, ON-area half-mile oval. The Dorchester, ON racer has
seven Delaware track championships to his credit, two Super Series crowns,
and three Sportsman titles.
Just prior to halfway, Robblee came back from a lap down after serving a
'stop and go' penalty for driving over an air hose, following a pit stop.
He took the lead for the first and only time when race leader DJ Kennington
(Castrol Intrepid) pitted on lap 192 of the 300 lap race.
Finishing second to Robblee was Gibbons, whose Canadian Tire Chevy came
back from three laps down, due to a flat tire. Dave Whitlock finished third
in his Fast Lane Taurus.
In terms of the National championship, Don Thomson's second consecutive
National crown didn't come easily. The Home Hardware Chevy driver started
second in the field of 38 and led twice, but spent 15 laps in the pits
repairing damage to his right-rear suspension. A miscue saw Thomson drive
away from his pit before the lugnuts were tightened on his right-rear
wheel, which caused his tire to fall off soon after returning to the track.
Nonetheless, the high attrition rate during the race allowed Thomson's
team to make repairs to his car and come home in 18th place. That was good
enough to secure a 40-point victory over Kennington, who finished second in
the championship hunt, after posting a fourth-place finish.
