Powell Wins Takes Second-Straight Win At Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (September 28, 2002) -- Powell Motorsports captured their second-straight Grand-Am Cup Series victory at Mosport International Raceway today in the Sunoco Ultra 94 presents the Mosport Three Hour. The much anticipated battle between the local Grand Sport I teams lived up to expectations as Toronto's Doncaster Racing and Port Perry's Powell Motorsports battled for the lead to the very end.
Port Perry's Devon Powell started the Sunoco Ultra 94-sponsored #11 Corvette in the second position, but slipped as low as fourth place before turning over the reigns to American Doug Goad, who charged back to the front and took the lead in the final hour of the race.
Toronto's Scott Maxwell maintained the lead throughout his opening stint in the Doncaster #76 Porsche, as did his co-driver David Empringham, also of Toronto, until the final 20 minutes of the race when he could hold off Goad no longer.
A full course caution with only eight minutes remaining in the race diminished any hopes of the Doncaster team coming back into the lead as the race finished under yellow. Another Toronto-based team, Fiorano Racing's #119 Porsche, finished third overall.
The win gives Powell Motorsports a one-point lead over Doncaster Racing in the team championship standings, and driver Powell and Goad a three-point advantage over Maxwell in the driver standings.
The Grand Sport II class held some of the most exciting racing of the day, with the leaders running nose-to-tail and exchanging the lead numerous times throughout the race. In the end, it was the Shriener Racing #30 Mustang Cobra R that took the class victory. The points-leading #53 Mustang had been one of the top contenders early in the race until an off-track excursion dropped the car back several laps.
Canadian-based Theetge Motorsports finished second in the class with its #73 Acura NSX, while the #04 Audi S4 of Istook/Aines Motorsports took third.
Ken Dobson and Beau Buisson dominated the Sport Touring I class in the Villaconn International #34 BMW Z3. Dobson put the BMW at the front of the class early and built a considerable lead before handing the reigns over during a caution to Buisson, who cruised to the victory.
The Team Lexus #0 IS300 finished second in the class, while its team cars - the #3 IS300 and #2 IS300 - battled it out for third place in the closing laps of the race. With only eight minutes remaining in the race, the sister cars go into each other causing the #2 Lexus to spin into the wall in four. The substantial damage to the tire wall resulted in the race ending under yellow.
Wayne Nonnamaker in the HRPworld.com #41 Acura Integra LS built a tremendous lead in the Sport Touring II class early on, and his brother Will Noannamaker had not trouble maintaining it for the class win. The Bill Fenton Motorsports #27 Acura Integra LS took second in the class, despite being spun out in the final hour the third-place #5 Mazda Miata of DTM Engineering.
The final round of the Grand-Am Cup Series will be at Daytona during the Grand American Finale, November 8-10. Tickets are currently on sale for the event and may be purchased online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com
