Whitlock and Thomson win Twin 100s at Delaware
Thomson one race away from second Super Series title in a row
LONDON, ON - Defending CASCAR Super Series champion Don Thomson took
another step toward his second consecutive National championship when he
led all 100 laps of the second Twin 100 Sprint Race at Delaware Speedway on
Friday night.
With just Sunday's season-ending 'Great Canadian 300' standing between
Thomson and the championship, the Home Hardware Chevy driver has an
unofficial 72-point lead over DJ Kennington - who finished third in the
second Twin 100 race. Kennington's Castrol Intrepid took the final podium
position, behind Robbie Thompson, the winner of the CASCAR season opener at
Delaware, back in May.
Three-time CASCAR champ Dave Whitlock won the first 100-lapper. Whitlock's
Fast Lane Taurus started seventh and moved into the lead on lap 84 when a
turn 4 scramble - involving race leader Peter Gibbons and Steve Robblee -
knocked the top two drivers high on the track, allowing Whitlock to slide
underneath the pair and into the lead. Gibbons (Canadian Tire Chevy) and
Robblee (Grogan / Havoline Taurus) finished second and third, respectively.
During time trials for the Great Canadian 300, veteran racer Neil Fair put
his Skoal Inc. Intrepid on the pole for Sunday's season finale with a lap
of 19.734 seconds around the half-mile Delaware Speedway oval. He will line
up alongside of Don Thomson, who was second quickest (19.768 secs.).
The top 26 starting positions for Sunday's race were determined on Friday
night. The 'Final Qualifier' race will take place Saturday afternoon to
determine the rest of the starting field for the 'Great Canadian 300'.
