Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship
Evaluation day winners
Three move up
Champagne, de Heus and Vorrath win evaluation day honours
MOSPORT, ON - Three drivers stood above the rest at the end of the Sunoco
Ron Fellows Karting Championship evaluation day on Sept 27. Hurricane
Racing MBA's Matt Champagne, Gold Kart's Aaron de Heus and ItalKart's Jordy
Vorrath will all compete in the 12 race Bridgestone/Firestone Toronto Star
Wheels F2000 racing series in 2003.
The even was held in a constant downpour all day and Ron Fellow was
impressed with what he saw.
"I think all ten drivers did a fantastic job. We were only supposed to give
two Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship scholarships, but the drivers
made it too tough to pick just two, so we took three to compete next year."
"I was really nervous, there was more pressure today than on a race day,"
said Fonthill, ON's Champagne. "I think the rain negated any car experience
I had. It was tough and everyone here is a good driver. So I am very
honoured to have been picked by Sunoco and Ron Fellows and I hope to
represent both of them well next year."
Vancouver, BC's Vorrath, who had never sat in a F2000 until evaluation day
was also very happy. "It's great. I thank Sunoco and Ron Fellows for the
opportunity. I didn't mind the rain, in fact in a kart I feel more
comfortable in the rain, so if anything I think it helped me."
Probably the biggest surprise of the group was Goodwood, ON's de Heus, as
he too had never sat in a race car. He put on a display in the rain that
made him look like a seasoned pro. There was no way the judges could
overlook him. "I remember on the day I was picked that I thought, 'I would
get one day in a race car' and I thought that was great. Now after being
picked to run all next year, it just a dream come true. I haven't been able
to move up to cars because of a lack of budget, but now I plan to make the
most of the opportunity given to me by Sunoco and Ron Fellows."
The event ends the season for the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship
and Sunoco's Brad King was happy with all the karter's performances in the
first year of the championship.
"Sunoco couldn't be happier," King said. "Mosport was my first ever karting
event, now I - like Sunoco - am hooked. We learned a lot this year, and I'm
sure that the Sunoco Ron Fellows Karting Championship will really grow next
year, plus we have three of our own to represent Sunoco and Ron Fellows in
cars next year."
Fellows thinks his three team drivers will all learn from each other next
year in the Bridgestone/Firestone Toronto Star Wheels F2000 series.
"The each have their own strengths, but they are all good. I think Matt's
[Champagne] experience will help Aaron [de Heus] and Jordy [Vorrath], and I
expect Jordy's raw talent and Aaron's ability to attack a racetrack with
controlled aggression will help Matt develop futher next year. We have
three really good ones, that will each feed of each other."
The objective of the SRFKC is to help foster a professional environment for
kart drivers; help create a positive attitude towards appearance, conduct
and discipline; help foster the employment of the best practices for the
safe and fair running of competitions; and help kart drivers to move up the
racing ladder to automobile racing.
