> Christian Begins Championship Series with Top 5
>
> Atlanta, GA, - After posting a 12th place qualifying for Sunday's Alan
Kulwicki 250, Steven Christian proceeded to work his way through the field
to earn the Lucas Oil team their first Top 5 finish of the 2002 USAR
Championship Series.
>
> When a lap three caution caught up two of the race leaders, Christian
restarted 10th.. For the next seventy laps, he rode sandwiched between
the #31 (Gault) and #11 (Puryear) entries, frequently looking under the #31
but not quite able to make a pass. Finally, on lap 79, Christian was able
to get around Gault to assume the 9th spot.
>
> Pitting on lap 100 for gas and tires, the Lucas Oil team rejoined the
field near the back When the lead cars pitted on lap 143, Christian grabbed
third. Ten laps later, the #73 of Jeff Agnew managed to drive around
Christian. On lap 168, Huffman also bested Christian, sending the #16
Chevrolet Monte Carlo to 5th. When the #28 made contact with the turn four
wall on lap 170, Christian moved up one position. The first of two red
flags flew on lap 199 when raindrops slowed the field at Winchester
Speedway. The respite was short lived when the sun came out almost
immediately and the field was able to resume racing on lap 204.
>
> The second red flag came out on lap 209 when several of the lead lap cars
got together on turn four. After a lengthy clean-up, racing once again
resumed on lap 209 with Christian still in 4th. Sarvis mounted a challenge
on Christian for 4th following the restart, and Christian gave up the fight
on lap 239. The #16 Lucas Oil team sits seventh in overall Championship
Series points, with four events yet to be run.
