Confusion in Legends Cars Feature Cleared up at HMS on Lowcountry Concrete
Night
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (September 23, 2002) - In the controversial finish to the
Legends Cars feature event on Saturday night, September 28th, track
officials reviewed all information and have released the official results.
Jimmy Lang, of Bluffton, SC has been declared the winner with Pooler's
Andrew Smith finishing second. Billy Tysinger of Hardeeville, SC, Jonathan
Haidon of Hilton Head, SC and Walter Reardon of Savannah, GA rounded out
the top five.
The controversy began as the yellow flag was thrown when the leaders were
coming to the finish line. Track officials proceeded to return to a green,
white and checkered flag finish, but the scoreboard operator and track
announcer failed to receive this information. After the race was
restarted, race director John Sanchez, told the flagman who had the
checkered flag in hand to throw the white on the next lap. The next lap,
the flagman finished the race with the checkered flag. On the final lap,
Andrew Smith pulled into victory lane as Lang, the leader on the white flag
lap, thought that the race was over when he pulled high and waived that he
was slowing down. Smith even commented in victory lane that he did not
understand the finish of the race.
The "green-white-checkered" rule is not written in the rules, however it
has been a situation that has occurred at HMS approximately 3 or 4 times
since the track opened in July of 2002. In the past, if the yellow flag
came out on the last lap, the last lap would be scored but the race would
finish up with two laps to allow the field to sort out and finish the race
instead of producing a lot of jump starts and "all or nothing" moves that
could injure someone.
Coincidentally, the last lap caution occurred this same night in the
Legends Cars B-Main and there was a "one lap" shoot out to the finish. In
Sanchez's short tenure as race director, he had not been faced with this
last lap caution situation until tonight. Although the checkered flag was
given to Smith on "lap 31," Lang will be declared the winner because the
official finish will be how the cars finished on "lap 30" or the white flag
lap.
"We did what we felt was fair and just after we had time to review all of
the circumstances surrounding the situation," said John Sanchez. "From now
on, if the race has a caution flag on the final lap, we will end the race
with a green and then checkered in a one-lap shoot-out. All drivers will
be aware of this and we hope that they will use good judgement in this
situation."
Next Saturday night, September 28th, the Hardeeville Motor Speedway will be
back in action with its 3rd annual Hargray Fan Appreciation Night featuring
the O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models, Legends Cars, Mini Stocks,
Xtreme Stock Cars and Road Warriors. The special attraction will be racing
lawnmowers capable of speeds of more than 70 miles per hour. Gates open at
4:00 p.m., qualifying begins at 6:00 p.m. followed by the National Anthem
