ADVISORY/AAA To Release Study On Effectiveness of Low-Cost Improvements to High-Risk Intersections

    --

Program Dramatically Cuts Injuries and Reduces Crashes At High-Risk,
    Urban Intersections With Traffic Lights

WHAT: AAA will release the results of a new five-year
study evaluating the effectiveness of a pilot
project implementing low-cost changes such as signal
timing, signage, and center turn lanes at high-crash
intersections. In 2000, intersection crashes were
responsible for approximately 8,500 deaths, one
million injuries and accounted for 44% of all
crashes. In addition, these crashes cost the country
over 40 billion dollars every year.

The demonstration project is funded in part by a $2
million grant from AAA Michigan. The project
examined improvements at 60 intersections in two
                  cities.
