2001 export figures revealed

On the 30th, JAMA announced car export figures in 2001. Total figures declined by 6.5 percent to 4,166,169 units due to the unstable US market and exchange rate fluctuation in Europe. The figure fell for the first time in two years. When calculated in dollars, car exports reached $61,714,010,000 and figures for parts were $20,099,670,000. Exports of passenger cars declined, for the first time in five years and figures for trucks also fell for the first time in two years. On the other hand, bus export figures increased for the second consecutive year. Exports account for 42.6 percent of total domestic production and the ratio declined by 1.3 percent. Although exports to Middle East increased. (up 29.4 percent to 381,965 units), figures to other areas decreased (down 14.5 percent to 351,227 units for other Asian nations, and down 21.2 percent to 895,415 units for Europe). High tariff in the latter half resulted in export declines to China (down 10.8 percent to 41,990 units. JAMA expects that 2002 export figures will continue to decline, especially to Europe and North America.

Overseas production in the third quarter drops

JAMA announced on January 30 that overseas production in the third quarter of 2001 (July to September) fell by 3.8 percent to 1,511,560 units. This is the first time that figures declined since they started statistics in the first quarter of 2000. This is mainly due to automaker's decisions to decrease overseas production in line with shrinking European and US markets. But total overseas production from January to September increased by 0.1 percent to 4,793,873 units. Overseas production (third quarter) in Asia fell by 2.2 percent to 421,511 units and figures in Europe also declined by 9 percent to 215,259 units (down 5.4 percent to 192,461 units in EU). Production in North America decreased by 1.7 percent to 693,660 units (down 7.1 percent to 549,889 units in the US).

Mitsubishi to adopt DaimlerChrysler's automatic transmission for small trucks

Mitsubishi has decided to develop automatic transmissions for the Canter, a small truck, in cooperation with DaimlerChrysler. Currently, the two companies develop their own automatic transmissions (AT). For mid-size and large trucks, Mitsubishi plans to expand application of INOMAT to clear Japanese new long-term exhaust regulations. For small trucks, which Mitsubishi is trying to expand sales of in Europe, they are scheduled to adopt the same automatic transmissions as the DaimlerChrysler Spring, a small truck. While DaimlerChrysler develops ATs for small trucks based on ATs used for passenger cars, Mitsubishi uses AT technology of mid-size and large trucks for small truck ATs. Therefore DaimlerChrysler's AT performance for small trucks is higher than those of Mitsubishi.

Toyota establishes a new technology to control air volume content

Toyota has revealed that they used a new technology that can control air volume content for the Mark II Blit, a station wagon. This aims at improving driving comfort of station wagons. They have already used the control system for sedans, which are easier to control air volume content of than station wagon. The control system can maintain air volume content by automatically adjusting cabin deformation caused by external factors with panels of other parts. When vehicles with windows closed enter tunnels or drive on rough roads, air volume content slightly changes which results in lower comfort for drivers. Toyota has analyzed the relationship between deformation and air content with a computer. They have finally established a new technology so that when back doors of station wagons move and shape of the roof panel slightly changes, rear floor will deform as much as the roof panel to maintain the same air volume content. They plan to expand application of the new technology to other station wagons.

Mazda emphasizes development of high fuel efficiency technology

Mazda has revealed that in order to deal with growing clean demands they will focus on increasing fuel efficiency more than clearing UELV levels. They have concluded that increasing fuel efficiency will be easier for them to contribute to environment because they plan to strengthen sports lineup. They are scheduled to clear 2010 fuel standards for their entire lineup as soon as possible to increase their brand identity.

Hyundai Motor Japan intends to triple sales

2001 car production declines

On January 29, JAMA announced that 2001 domestic production fell by 3.6 percent to 9,777,091 units. This is the first time in two years that figures did not reach 10 million units and the figure is the second lowest following 1979. In addition to expansion in overseas production, domestic sales declines were the main cause for this. Passenger car production fell by 2.9 percent to 8,117,563 units and truck figures decreased by 7.3 percent to 1,601,536 units while bus production increased by 6.5 percent to 58,092 units. The truck production figure was the second lowest and 1/3 the peak figure due to extended sluggishness in the transportation business. Honda, Hino and Suzuki showed increases while Mitsubishi and Isuzu showed two-digit decreases. In December alone, total production figures declined for the fourth consecutive month to 730,099 units (down 9.5 percent).

They have also started sales of the Canter in South Africa but through Freightliner sales network. In the US, it will also be sold through Freightliner's network, but their restructuring project is expected to delay sales start by 1 to 2 months. Mitsubishi and Freightliner have already agreed on establishing a light commercial vehicle sales division. For development, they plan to strengthen cooperation with DaimlerChrysler for diesel emission reduction technology because Mitsubishi is superior in Nox reduction technology while DaimlerChrylser is good at particulate matter reduction. In fiscal 2001 (ending in March 2002), their business is expected to return to profitability thanks to 25 percent personnel cuts. Recently, orders for luxury sightseeing buses have been increasing and they expect they can compete with Hino/Isuzu alliance.

Bridgestone vs. Michelin for run-flat tire competition

Since Bridgestone and Continental formed an alliance for run-flat tires, competition between Bridgestone and Michelin has been getting fierce. Bridgestone supplies their self-supporting run-flat tires for the BMW Z8 and Toyota Soarer (Lexus SC430), and total production in 2005 is expected to reach 1.5 million units (for passenger cars, trucks and buses). Michelin, whose fun-flat tires are integrated with wheels, are providing their PAX system technology to Goodyear and Pirelli in order to expand their run-flat tire demands. Continental also has tire/wheel integration technology, called CSR, but their technology requires normal wheels, unlike PAS system. Bridgestone intends to strengthen their sales and defeat Michelin by combining their self-supporting technology and CSR because the both technologies require standard wheels.

They also plan to tentatively sell a new FCEV in line with the introduction of the new HEV. Honda intends to strengthen their competitiveness by shifting their passenger lineup to ULEVs by 2005. They have cleared ULEV levels with the Civic Hybrid, which will soon appear on the North American market. The new HEV is expected to clear SULEV levels by greatly reducing evaporation.

The model is the first model developed by only young development staff (in their 20s). The model is available in nine different colors. They shortened time required for everything from planning to model decision to eight month (about 1/3 their conventional time). The user target of the Alto Lapin is people in their 20s and 30s which does not overlap user category of the Alto. Suzuki reveals 2002 plans

On the 22nd, Suzuki announced that they set domestic sales for subcompacts in 2002 at 600,000 units (up 5 percent), the highest level ever. The figure will be equivalent to a sales share of 31.5 percent. They also plan on sales increases for larger vehicles by 16 percent to 60,000 units due to brisk sales of the Chevrolet Cruz. They expect the introduction of the Alto Lapin and MR wagon will help expand sales. For exports, they plan on 8 percent increases for complete cars (208,000 units) and 9 percent increases for CKD (66,000 units). They also expect that total production will increase in 2002 (up 11 percent to 941,000 units), and OEM production is also expected to increase to 73,000 units due to production start for Nissan in addition to Mazda. They also plan to increase overseas production by 8 percent to 832,000 units. For motorcycles, they have set sales target at 112,000 units (up 5 percent) for the domestic market and 382,000 units for exports (up 3 percent). Motorcycle production will increase by 17 percent to 446,000 units in Japan and 5 percent to 1126,000 units overseas.

Suzuki and Kawasaki announced on January 22 that the two companies will start OEM production for motorcycles in February. This is based on a business tie-up agreement made last August. For the first step, they decided to supply each other with three models (including scooters). Kawasaki are scheduled to procure the Skywave 250 (250cc), Avenis 150 (150cc), and DR-Z125 (for the overseas market) from Suzuki while Suzuki will procure the Balius (sports type), 250SB, and KX65 (for the overseas market) from Kawasaki.

Mitsubishi to use DaimalerChrysler's financial network in Australia

Hino announces 2002 sales and production plans

On January 22, Hino announced sales and production targets for 2002. For the domestic market, they plan to sell 23,500 standard trucks (up 5.6 percent), equivalent to a 30 percent share, and 12,000 small trucks (up 19.1 percent), equivalent to 12 percent. They hope the Ranger Pro, a mid-size truck introduced at the end of 2001, will bring up their sales even in the severe economic condition. Hino expects the 2002 Japanese truck market will further shrink to 78,000 units for standard trucks and 100,000 units for small trucks. They think the government decision to lengthen the moratorium period for the new Nox regulations will have negative effect on truck sales. Their production target, including trucks and buses, is 36,450 units for Japan (up 4.6 percent) and 18,557 units for exports (up 2.7 percent).

They are scheduled to lend their vehicles to local governments and corporations to help iron out early problems. The vehicles, Atrai Hybrids, are based on the Atrai Cargo and are the first hybrid subcompact to be accepted for number plates. The tests will be conducted around Osaka for a year in order to expose the vehicles to conditions in all four seasons. The Atrai Hybrid is equipped with a parallel type hybrid system that combines a 660cc engine and motor. The system was displayed at Tokyo Motor Show last year. They have increased fuel efficiency by 30 percent. Daihatsu used hybrid technology of Toyota for motors and batteries.

They expect total subcompact demand in Japan will stay at the same level (1,830,000 units) but they have set their sales target at 525,000 units, up 2.1 percent, which is equivalent to a 28.1 percent sales share. In their plan, they will sell 525,000 units for subcompacts and 25,000 units for compacts. For exports, they expect figures will increase by 14.5 percent to 74,000 units. Their domestic production is expected to decline by 6.7 percent to 711,000 units. Of that total, 624,000 units are Daihatsu models (up 2.9 percent) and 53,000 units are OEM models (down 56.5 percent). This is because Toyota has transferred production of Noah series models to another company. In 2001, their domestic sales fell by 1.3 percent to 541,998 units (down 1.2 percent to 514,089 units for subcompacts and down 2.8 percent to 27,909 units for compacts). In line with sales declines of new car sales in September, used car sales also showed decreases. However, sales of used cars have been surpassing those for new cars for 51 straight months, and the ratio between new and used cars is 100:135. On the other hand, used compact passenger car sales dropped, for the sixth consecutive year, by 4.5 percent to 2,913,775 units. They expect that longer holding period of cars hindered sales increases. Used cargo vehicles in 2001 also fell by 2 percent to 601,785 units while bus sales increased by 8.5 percent to 16,466 units. In December alone, used car sales plunged by 8.6 percent to 440,130 units (down 8.6 percent to 377,351 units for passenger cars and down 8 percent to 47,551 units for cargo vehicles). Mitsubishi to set turbocharged versions for their lineup

Mitsubishi has decided to set turbocharged engines for the Airtrek and eK wagon, both introduced last year, in order to meet growing needs of their users. This is also because in the first half of 2002, they have no plan for new model introductions. They also set automatic transmissions for the Lancer Evolution, a sporty model, for the first time. The Airtrek is a intermediate model between station wagon and SUV/minivan and is equipped with a 2 and 2.4 liter engine. Most users of the Airtrek are young people in their 20s and 30s who demand more powerful driving. The eK wagon, a subcompact introduced last October, is maintaining its high sales level, however, male users prefer more powerful models, which makes it difficult to compete with the Honda Fit and Toyota Vitz. Their first new model in 2002 will be the Z car, developed with DaimlerChrysler and introduced in November.

According to an interview with the Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun, Takashi Yamada, president of Daihatsu, believes economic conditions this year will be more severe than last year and they expect total domestic automobile sales will not reach 1,800,000 units, a figure which most industry analysts agree with. In the subcompact market, competition is expected to grow fiercer due to Nissan’s entry and Mitsubishi’s new model introductions. Nonetheless, he asserted that Daihatsu intends to become the top maker in the market, defeating even Suzuki, by strengthening product competitiveness and sales strategy. In line with increasing environmental consciousness, they are increasing the number of ULEV models in their lineup equipped with TOPAZ catalysts. In 2004, the government is scheduled to shift many of their fleets to clean vehicles. Daihatsu particularly expects local governments, who tend to own a large number of subcompacts, to attach more importance to their improved ULEV lineup. Through cooperation with Toyota, they started production of the Terios at Toyota’s Venezuelan plant last year. The model was accepted as national car there. Daihatsu is also pursuing production cooperation with Toyota in Pakistan and Australia and plans to expand the alliance overseas.

He said that their low-cost multi-functional seat belts and wooden steering wheels for luxury vehicles also contributed to their sales expansion. They also expect that Toyota’s decision to adopt immobilizers to their entire lineup by 2005 will lead to their further sales increases. In overseas markets, they plan to start production of seat belts and switches in China and continue to manufacture switches for the Toyota Corolla in Brazil. In Europe, they are scheduled to construct a new plant in Czech and regard the new plant as the main production base in Europe for switches, seat belts and keys in line with Toyota’s European expansion. In the US market, they are scheduled to introduce a new Legacy-based pickup and they hope it will help them achieve a new record sales level. On the other hand, they expect that domestic sales will decline by 0.9 percent to 287,000 units. For production, they expect that domestic figures will fall by 0.6 percent to 460,000 units due to large declines in subcompact production (down 10.1 percent) and overseas figures will increase by 4.7 percent to 111,000 units due to production start of the new pickup at SIA.

In China, they plan to produce a full lineup of trucks (currently 2 ton and 6-10 ton trucks).

On the same day, Isuzu revealed their 2002 sales and production plans. For the domestic market, their sales target is 22,000 units (up 14 percent) for standard trucks and 43,000 units (up 2 percent) for small trucks. They speculate that revision of Nox regulations will help bring up standard truck sales. RV sales are expected to match last year’s level of 4,500 units. For overseas production, they plan to increase diesel engines in Poland and the US by 20 percent. For exports, they expect that standard truck figures will increase by 19 percent to 15,000 units (4,000 for the Chinese market) and small truck figures will decrease by 5 percent to 53,000 units due to declines to South America and Middle East. Exports of pickup trucks are expected to decrease by 31 percent to 62,000 units due to production shifts to Thailand. Their total overseas production is expected to fall by 10 percent to 213,000 units because of inventory adjustment while increasing production in China for mid-size trucks and Thailand for pickup trucks.

Yushin to expand key set production in China

Yushin has decided to enter the Chinese market. This year they plan to independently establish key set plant in Guangzhou, China. This is their first time to procure key sets from overseas. The new plant will be managed by local staff. For the time being, the majority of their products will be exported to Japan. Their annual sales target is 3 billion to 5 billion yen ($23 million to 38 million).

The introduction of two new models, including a minivan, helped it maintain this lofty achievement. The Toyota Vitz (Yaris) captured second, followed by the Honda Stream. In the top 10, Toyota dominates with 5 places, while Honda occupies four places and Nissan managed to gain only one place. In December, the Honda Fit was the top model (for the second straight month).

Sales of the Honda Fit surpass 100,000 units

Honda revealed on the 10th that sales of the Fit, equipped with a 1.3 liter engine, reached 100,000 units. The Fit was introduced in June last year. At only six months since its release, this is the fastest climb to 100,000 units ever achieved by any Honda model. Before the Fit, the Stream was the top model with 10 months. They speculate that high fuel efficiency (23km/l) is the main reason for its success.

Starting with the next Corolla, Toyota plans to conduct simultaneous global production. The new system will begin a year after they start domestic production. Currently two to three year time gaps sometimes happen overseas during model changes. The Corolla is now produced in fifteen different countries, including Japan, US, Canada, Thailand, Indonesia and the UK, and they plan to include Brazil. They have been expanding standardization of body welding flexible lines and application of digital procedure maintaining systems. Recently, production and supplier supply systems designated for the start-up of simultaneous production have been completed.

Mitsubishi to form an alliance with Freightliner

Mitsubishi has agreed on forming an alliance with Freightliner, who also has strong ties with DaimlerChrylser, for truck sales. Freightliner does not handle small and mid-size trucks, which Mitsubishi is good at. Mitsubishi has been proceeding with plans to facilitate truck sales with DaimlerChrysler. They have already started sales of the Canter (a small truck) in the UK, France and Germany through DaimlerChrylserÕs sales network. However, DaimlerChrysler also handles small trucks, which makes it difficult to clearly differentiate models of the two companies. Prior to sales of Mitsubishi trucks, Freightliner plans to restructure their sales system this year. Mitsubishi currently has about 200 dealerships and sells 6,000 units annually in the North American market.

Mitsubishi to procure diesel engines from DaimlerChrysler

Mitsubishi plans to procure diesel engines for the Z car from DaimlerChrysler. The Z, a world strategy car jointly developed by the two companies, is scheduled to be produced at NedCar (under Mitsubishi and Smart brand names) in the Netherlands in 2004 for the European market. It will also be produced in Japan this year. The diesel engine is expected to be the same engine as the Mercedes Benz A Class (1.5 liter engine). NedCar currently procures diesel engines from Renault. However, they have concluded that technology for small diesel engines by DaimlerChrysler excels that of Renault. They also think that using the existing engines will help reduce costs. For gasoline engines for the Z car, they have already decided to produce them at a merger between Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler in Germany.

Instead, they plan to pour more money into FCEV and powertrain development. He also said that although Nissan is putting greater emphasis on the Chinese market and plans to increase parts production, he thinks that China will not become a main production base for the Japanese market. In Europe, where foreign automakers are experiencing difficulty increasing sales, they plan to strengthen ties with Renault in order to return to profitability in fiscal 2002.

Honda forecasts for 2002 business

Mr. Hiroyuki Yoshino, president of Honda, has revealed in an interview with the Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun, that Honda has moved up plans to achieve 900,000 units sales in the domestic market by one year and as a result, this year they plan to achieve 920,000 new car sales. In the North American market, they plan to increase sales by 20,000 units to 1,220,000 in conjunction with the full operational start of the Alabama plant, although total demand is expected to decrease. In Europe, they have increased sales targets to more than 25 percent based on the successful introductions of the Jazz (Fit) and new CR-V. They hope to achieve profitability in the European market this year, but it will be difficult with the current exchange rate of 1 euro to 105 yen. In Asia, they plan to strengthen production of powertrain parts and importing compact vehicles from Thailand in 2003. In China, they have recently started production of automatic transmissions in addition to engines and this spring they are scheduled to start production of the Odyssey. They also plan to invest over 10 billion yen ($75 million, $1=133 yen) to strengthen welding and painting facilities in order to increase production capacity from the current 50,000 to 120,000 units. In Brazil, they will start production of small cars in 2003. For hybrid cars, he said that they have no plans for a large change but it depends on gasoline price.

2001 truck sales decline

According to truck associations, standard truck sales in 2001 declined by 0.4 percent to 76,923 units. Figures have not reached 80,000 units for the third consecutive year. This is mainly due to weak distribution demand resulting from economic instability. Truck makers hope that revisions in NOx regulations will bring increases in truck demand. Sales of large trucks fell sharply (down 5.6 percent) to 38,001 units. Hino showed a decrease of 8.6 percent. On the other hand, mid-size truck sales increased by 5.3 percent to 38,932 units. They speculated that economic downturn forced many of their customers to shift from large trucks to mid-size trucks. Hino's sales jumped by 79 percent thanks to the new model introduced in December.

Denso shows optimistic outlook

Denso President, Hiroshi Okano, is very optimistic about the current global environment and has said in an interview that domestic inventory adjustment and favorable exchange rates will bring an economic upturn starting in the latter half of 2002. He also aggressively asserted that Toyota's CCC21 (parts cost reduction project) will provide an excellent opportunity for Denso to demonstrate their high technology, quality and cost competitiveness. He added that they will concentrate on developing next-generation technologies in order to establish Denso's 25 different products at the top of their respective global rankings. For overseas expansion, they will strengthen production in Eastern Europe and Mexico.

2001 New car sales fall slightly

JADA announced on the 7th that new car sales (excluding subcompacts) in 2001 declined by 0.9 percent to 4,059,046 units. Annual sales decreased for the first time in two years. This is due to economic slow down in the latter half. However, compact car sales increased because of strong sales of the Honda Fit and Toyota Noah/Voxy. HondaÕs sales reached the highest ever of 559,772 units (up 22.9 percent) and surpassed figures of Nissan. On the other hand, figures for Mitsubishi and Fuji Heavy Industries decreased sharply. Nissan, Hino and Suzuki also showed increases.

Japan Mini Vehicle Association announced on the same day that 2001 sales of subcompacts fell by 1.1 percent to 1,273,569 units. However, the figure was 50,000 units over their initial forecast, possibly due to consumers shifting purchasing plans to subcompacts in response to a growing sense of unease over recent economic trends. Although sales declined for the second consecutive year, the 2001 figure was the third highest ever following 1999 and 2000. Fuji Heavy Industries was the only company that showed an overall increase for 2001. In December alone, sales increased by 2.2 percent to 140,553 units, but all makers other than Mazda showed decreases.

Toyota to adopt a new development method

For 2002, Toyota plans to concentrate on sales of popular models such as RVs and small cars. Last year, they focused on development of new sedans in response to the success of the Corolla and other sedans in their line up. However, sedan demands have been decreasing and they have decided to shift their target. Sales of RVs last year accounted for 60 percent of total new car sales due to brisk sales of the Honda Stepwagon and Toyota Noah/Voxy.

Toyota to achieve long traveling distance for FCEVs

Toyota has revealed that they will increase the traveling distance of FCEVs to three times the normal distance of gasoline vehicles. They intend to increase the accessibility of FCEVs as a way of improving their public image as an environmentally friendly company. Toyota also plans to solve problems related to interior roominess, including downsizing gasoline reformer systems, within the next three years. At present, the traveling distance of pure hydrogen fueled vehicles is 300 km. They are currently developing the FCHV-5, a Kluger based vehicle, and trying to achieve a traveling distance of 1,500 km. It will be equipped with reformer systems installed under the floor and accommodate five people.

Toyota achieves a 10 percent sales share in the US

In 2001, Toyota's sales share for new cars in the US market surpassed 10 percent for the first time. At the same time, total sales share by Japanese automakers (eight companies) reached the highest ever of 26 percent. This is mainly due to aggressive "zero-interest rate" campaigns in the US market. Toyota achieved a 7.5 percent sales increase (1,741,000 units). Honda and Mitsubishi also showed strong sales. According to report released by US automakers, all of them showed sales declines in 2001.

Toyota President, Mr. Fujio Cho, has revealed in an interview that he expects the automotive industry to recover and show sales increases in the latter half of 2002. Although their domestic sales share declined in 2001, the new models released in the end of last year (the Noah/Voxy, Premio/Allion) are expected to revitalize 2002 sales. In Europe, they are trying to return to profitability by strengthening their lineup, including the new Corolla, produced at the UK plant, and Avensis, produced at the French plant. They also plan to increase local procurement and improve their distribution systems. For the Asian market, Toyota plans to establish a strong production system in China prior to the 2008 Olympics in addition to effects from the entry to WTO. However, they have no plan for importing products from other Asian countries, including China. In terms of cooperation with PSA, they are scheduled to produce 300,000 units to bring about high volume efficiency. They also plan to expand sales, especially in Eastern Europe, by starting production in the Czech Republic in conjunction with transmission production in Poland.

Mazda to entrust production of the Premacy to Ford

Mazda will soon finalize talks with Ford for the C segment model (1.5 liter models) to be produced by Ford in Europe. They have cancel the Familia 5 doors and plan to choose the Premacy, a compact minivan. For the B segment model (1 to 1.5 liter), they are proceeding with the Demio as scheduled.

Mazda to strengthen public road driving tests

Mazda has decided to strengthen driving tests on public roads by sales staff prior to model introductions. This is a part of their sales training program. This is first time for Hino to develop products only for the North American market. Since domestic truck sales look grim, they have decided to strengthen overseas sales. They plan to complete a full truck lineup (class three to seven) for the North American market. Despite their weak sales in North America (3,000 units annually), their common rail diesel engines received high evaluation. Their annual sales target is 10,000 units.

Honda to expand overseas production in South East Asia

Honda has announced that they will start production of transmission gears in South East Asia. Transmission gears are mostly produced in Japan and supplied overseas due to difficulties in processing technology. However, tariff reduction in ASEAN countries in 2002 and expansion of local procurement of major parts forced them to speed up overseas production. Honda also plans to start operation of new plants in Malaysia in 2003 and will soon start construction of a new Indonesian plant. In Thailand, they are scheduled to produce a new small car, based on the Fit, in 2002 and start importing the model to Japan in 2003. As a result, 60 percent of their global production (3 million units) will be conducted overseas in 2003.

In China, they plan to increase production of scooters and set up R&D centers. In the middle of 2002, they are scheduled to export them to Japan. They will be sold at under 100,000 yen to stimulate the weak scooter market in Japan.
