Grand-Am Cup Championships Still Up For Grabs With Two Races Left
Three-Way Tie At Top Of Grand Sport I Driver Standings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 19, 2002) -- Grand American Road Racing Association has announced the latest point standings for the Grand-Am Cup Series, and with only two races remaining in the 2002 season, all four class championships are still up for grabs. The fiercest battle is in the Grand Sport I class, where the latest standings reveal a three-way tie for the lead in the driver standings between Scott Maxwell, Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
Doncaster Racing's Maxwell previously held a five-point lead over Powell and Goad in the standings, but the victory by the pair at the Mont-Tremblant 250 propelled them into a three-way tie for the top spot. In the GS I team standings, Doncaster was able to maintain its lead, but had it cut to only two points by the Powell Motorsports victory.
The Grand Sport II leaders were the only ones to gain ground in their quest for the championship among Grand-Am Cup's four classes. The second-place finish in the class by Max Q Motorsports-TF Racing in Mont-Tremblant increased their advantage over second-place Shreiner Racing from nine points to 11 in the team standings. Max Q drivers Nick Longhi and Emil Assentato improved their lead in the GS II driver standings to 14 points over Shreiner's Jeff Lapcevich and John Shreiner.
Several teams and drivers remain in contention for the Sport Touring I championships. In the class team standings, King Motorsports took over the lead from Villaconn International. King had previously trailed Villaconn by six points, but the team's fourth-place finish at Mont-Tremblant, coupled with Villaconn's early exit from the race, advanced the defending team champions into the lead.
Villaconn slipped to second place in the ST I team standings, four points behind the leader, while the Team Lexus #2 entry passed Team Lexus' #0 car to take over third place, 10 points out of the lead.
Team Lexus driver Jean-Francois Dumoulin maintained his lead in the class driver standings, despite his 10th place finish at Mont-Tremblant. However, he now faces a serious threat for the lead from King Motorsports' Bob Endicott, who took over the number two spot in the standings after jumping to within six points of the leader.
Villaconn driver Beau Buisson slid from second place into a three-way tie for third with teammates Bransen Patch and Don Salama, eight points behind the leader.
HRPworld.com and its drivers, Wayne and Will Nonnamaker, reclaimed the lead in the Sport Touring II class following their class victory in Mont-Tremblant. The team's #41 entry retook the top spot after the former leader, Bill Fenton Motorsports, retired from the race early with mechanical problems. After trailing by eight points, HRPworld.com is now two points ahead of Bill Fenton Motorsports.
The Nonnamaker brothers picked up a three-point advantage over Bill Fenton driver Bob Beede in the ST II driver standings, after trailing Beede by seven points previously.
In the manufacturer point standings, Porsche maintained its lead in the GS I class, however Chevy cut the German manufacturer's advantage from 10 points to seven. Ford continues its stronghold on the GS II class, as does Acura in the ST II class. However, Acura's lead in ST I class was reduced from 10 points to three by BMW's victory at Mont-Tremblant.
The ninth round of the Grand-Am Cup season will be held at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario. More information on the Grand-Am Cup Series can be found online at www.grandamcup.com.
