RACE NOTES

INAUGURAL NHRA EVENT A SUCCESS AT NO PROBLEM RACEWAY

What started off three and a half years ago as a race shop and a
1/8 mile testing dragstrip for Pat Joffrion turned into a state of the art
190 acre quarter-mile dragstrip and 1.8 mile road course facility.
This weekend's NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil Drag racing
Series event attracted more than 400 race cars from as far away as
California, along with a near capacity crowd with standing room only in the
sports bar located on the first floor of the dragstrip control tower.
Racers in attendance were more than pleased with the race track as
records were broken in Comp(E/EA) by Al Weiss, Super Stock(JT/SA) by
Richard Taylor, and in Stock(A/SM) by Roger Brogdon. Track records were
also established in the Top Alcohol classes with Troy Buff grabbing the
dragster records at 5.540 seconds and 256.16 mph and Jackie Stidham
establishing the funny car records at 5.741 second, 246.03 mph during
qualifying.
"All the partners are racers, so we wanted a racer friendly
facility," commented track owner Joffrion. "It has taken a long time, a
whole lot of money, and a lot of hard work but I think we've done ok."
The track features with a combination of paved and gravel pits,
race car garage units and electrical hook-ups that are rented to racers on
a race-by-race or a yearly basis, and a race shop equipped for major race
car repair.

$3,500 AWARDED TO SEALED POWER TOP QUALIFIERS
Troy Buff and Jackie Stidham picked up $1,250 each for qualifying
in the number one position in Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car
respectively. Buff recorded a 5.549-second pass at 255.39 in the final
qualifying session while Stidham set both ends of the track record in funny
car with a 5.741-second lap at 246.03 mph.
Richard Larsen took home $400 of Sealed Power money in Comp
Eliminator while Steve Reynolds drove him '86 Monte Carlo to the top spot
in Super Stock. Byhalia, Miss., resident Richard Taylor was the number one
qualifier in Stock.
