K.C. GOEWEY WINS DMC RACING PRODUCTS SPORTSMAN MAIN AT LEBANON VALLEY

September 14, 2002
WEST LEBANON, NY- K.C. Goewey brought his SPRINT PCS #45 to victory lane in
the 30-lap sportsman feature Saturday night at Lebanon Valley. It was the
second straight year that Goewey has won this event and he pocketed $1000 for
the victory. Paul LaRochelle his second 20-lap Pro Stock feature of the 2002
season. In other full-fendered action Ronny Jacobsen, Mark Tift, Dave Atwater
and John Fachini were victorious in the Pure Stock features. The Rookie Pro
Stock were separated into two main events, The "A" feature was won by Mark
Forrest and the "B" feature was won by Henry Warner.
Don Miller took the lead at the start of the 30-lap sportsman feature and
looked very strong at the front. The sportsman drivers are to be commended
for the way they raced on Saturday night. The caution lights only came on
twice in their main event. Goewey moved into second place on the first lap
and he began to challenge Miller for the lead by lap nine. About the same
time the leaders closed in on the back of the field. The top ten at halfway
was Miller, Goewey, Mike Keeler, Ed Harkins, Art Collins, Roy Bridge, Jeff
Watson, Frank Harper, Willie Galm and Bobby Knipe.
Miller made contact with one of the back markers on lap 18, but remained
in the lead. The most serious incident of the race came on lap 19 and
eliminated the cars running in third through fifth. Kory Gurney dropped fluid
on the track and spun hard into the turn three wall. Collins, Harkins and
Keeler also spun into the outside wall in turn three. Something appeared to
break on Miller's car on the restart and he crashed hard into the turn three
wall bringing out the second caution of the race. This gave the lead over to
Goewey with Watson and Harper in tow. Goewey led by almost a straightaway at
the finish of the race. Watson held on for second and Harper was third.
Bridge finished fourth and Galm rounded out the top five.
Chris Crews was the early leader in the 20-lap Pro Stock feature.
Problems on lap one as Dan Blackburn slowed on the frontstretch and collected
Don Ely. Robbie Speed moved into second on the restart. The very next lap
Danny Sanchez moved into third. At the halfway point it was Crews, Sanchez,
Speed, Ed Bachand and Paul LaRochelle. Problems for the second place man in
points on lap 11. Sanchez slowed at the front of the pack causing the rest of
the filed to check up. Jim Langenback crashed into the inside wall on the
frontstretch. Sanchez went pitside under the caution as well and would retire
later in the event. Langenback did recovered to finish sixth.
Bachand started to challenge Crews for the lead on lap 11. The crowd was
on their feet as the two battled side by side for several laps. Crews drifted
high and Bachand took the lead on lap 14. Problems for the leader on lap 17
while the field was under yellow. Bachand came to a standstill on the
backstretch and needed to be pushed back in to the pits. Crews resumed the
lead as a result of Bachand's misfortune. LaRochelle made his move on the
restart and took the lead in turn two with one lap to go. LaRochelle hung on
for his second win of 2002. Rob Yetman increased his point lead by finishing
second, Crews was third, Speed fourth and Eric Marimba rounded out the top
five.
Lebanon Valley will be back in action next Saturday night. It is the
final night of points in the full-fendered classes. The Pro Stock are
scheduled to run an extra distance event to decide the 2002 champion. Racing
starts at 5:30.
