Franklin, Wis., Sept. 14--Dave Gorny and Don Scheffler split victories in
twin 25-lap sportsmen features to highlight the final 2002 racing program
Saturday at the Hales Corners Speedway on American United Taxi Night.
Don Sorce Jr.'s pair of runner-up efforts in the dual main events was
enough to lock up the 2002 sportsmen track championship at the popular
third-mile clay oval.
Joe McGrath won the modified feature and J.J.Weickowski topped the Hales
whales main event.
Gorny won the first 25-lap sportsmen feature by leading flag to flag
ahead of runner-up Sorce Jr. Roger Lee, Brian Blake and Eddie Lemay Jr.
rounded out the top-five.
Scheffler won the second 25-lap sportsmen main in a photo-finish decision
over Sorce Jr. Terry Thomas placed third, with Pat Heaney fourth and Lee
fifth.
McGrath took the checkered flag in the 25-lap modified feature over Jim
Zdroik, who iced the 2002 modified track championship in the process.
Spencer Frost was third at the finish, with Mike Knurr fourth and Jimmy Muth
Jr. fifth.
Weickowski was followed at the conclusion of the 25-lap Hales Whales
headliner by 2002 Whales track champ Joe Altenhofen in second. Placing third
was Barry Cates, with David Paskiewicz and Jim Shambeau placing fourth and
fifth, respectively.
