NOTES OF INTEREST: This year’s version of the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200
will mark the 69th appearance of the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Salem
Speedway. Salem has been a staple on the RE/MAX Series schedule since
1955 when Jack Harrison won the inaugural event in a Ford. 3-time RE/MAX
Series champion Frank Kimmel will be vying for his 5th consecutive
victory at Salem. Only ARCA legend Jack Bowsher has won 5 consecutive at
Salem (’63-’65). However, Kimmel is the all-time ARCA winner at Salem
having won 6 of the last 9 events there. Outside of Bowsher, next in the
win category column are Tim Steele, Les Snow & Ramo Stott with 4 each.
Jason Jarrett, son of 99 Winston Cup champ Dale Jarrett, has finished
2nd to Kimmel at Salem in the last 2 events. Jarrett, who also finished
4th in his first ARCA/Salem start in the Spring of 2001, finished .161
seconds behind Kimmel there in the Spring of 02. 16-year-old Justin
Allgaier of Springfield IL will make his career-first Salem start this
weekend. In only 2 previous RE/MAX Series starts, Allgaier finished 11th
& 17th on the DuQuoin & Springfield dirt-miles respectively. Over 40
drivers from 11 states will be competing for 34 starting positions in
the Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200. In addition to RE/MAX Series practice and
Old Milwaukee Pole Qualifying on Saturday, a softball game, cruise-in
and music show are just part of the festivities planned for the big day.
On Saturday, following all the on-track action which includes full
programs of late models, street stocks and dash cars, there will be a
fish-fry at 5 PM followed by an infield softball game featuring ARCA
RE/MAX Series drivers vs. the WAMZ “Country Hams”. Then from 8 to 11,
the red-hot rock sounds of Gypsy will fill the autumn air with live
music. And, it’s all free to the public. Sunday’s pre-race festivities
feature an on-track autograph session just prior to the start of the
Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200. The $109,042 purse is a record amount for the
RE/MAX Series at Salem. Additional notable RE/MAX Series past winners at
Salem include Winston Cup champion Bobby Allison, six-time RE/MAX Series
champion Iggy Katona, ’52 Indy 500 winner Troy Ruttman, USAC stock car
veteran Don White and Winston Cup regular Ken Schrader to name a few.
