"Global Is As Global Does" - DaimlerChrysler To Consider Expansion in China, Japan, and Korea

September 8 2002

FRANKFURT -Dow Jones reported that DaimlerChrysler AG's supervisory board will decide Sept. 19 whether it will make another investment in Mitsubishi Motors , Handelsblatt says in an advance copy of an article Sunday.

The investment involves a Mitsubishi plan to spin its truck division, Fuso, off into a separate company. DaimlerChrysler board member Eckhard Cordes, who is responsible for trucks at the company, told Handelsblatt that DaimlerChrysler would be interested in a minority shareholding in Fuso if Mitsubishi goes through with the plan.

Elsewhere in Asia, Cordes is also considering starting a heavy trucks joint venture in China with the auto maker FAW, Handelsblatt says. A decision on the joint venture should be made by year-end.

And in Korea, DaimlerChrysler is considering increasing its stake in Hyundai Motor to up to 15% from the current 10%.
