CALLAWAY, WILLIAMS CLOSE OUT NHRA WEST CENTRAL DIVISION LUCAS OIL SEASON IN
WINNER'S CIRCLE
EARLVILLE, Iowa - In the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
presented by Steel Mart of Dubuque and Winnebago Industries at Tri-State
Raceway, Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) driver Lee Callaway and Top Alcohol
Funny Car (TAFC) competitor Kirk Williams each earned their second wins of
the season. Callaway defeated defending TAD division champion David Wells,
while Williams took out the division's defending TAFC champion, Cy
Chesterman in a repeat of his victory here a year ago.
Channelview, Texas, resident Callaway won the final at the starting line,
laying down a 5.658-second, 252.95-mph pass to Wells's quicker 5.649-second
effort. However, Callaway's .453-second reaction time (r.t.) was better
then Wells's .491-second r.t. This was Callaway's second win in as many
races. He won last month at the Nebraska Motorplex in Scribner, Neb.
Williams won what became a pedaling contest with Chesterman when both cars
lost power past the half-track mark. Williams's pass of 6.901 seconds at
190.96 mph was enough to get around Chesterman's 7.115-second, 137.82-mph
lap. For Williams, of Glendive, Mont., this was the fifth consecutive
final-round appearance of the season. His other win came at Douglas
International Raceway in Wyoming.
In other racing action, Comp Eliminator competitor Doug Engels of
Watertown, S.D., earned his first victory of the season as did defending
division Super Street champion Steve Domingues of Derby, Kan. Scott
Dugdale of Circle Pines, Minn., took home his second consecutive trophy in
Stock.
Rounding out the competition was Brent Voges of Defiance, Mo., in Super
Stock; Jim Hughes of Cave Creek, Ariz., in Super Comp; Scott Zimmerman of
Fond Du Lac, Wis., in Super Gas; Curtis Spracklin of Omaha, Neb., in Kerker
Sportsman Motorcycle; and Jason Guler of Dubuque, Iowa, in Jr. Dragster.
This was the last West Central Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing
Series event for 2002. Competitors may earn points at out-of-division
races through the first weekend in November.
