CHEVY MONTE CARLO 400 QUALIFYING RESULTS
RICHMOND, Va. (September 6, 2002) - The No. 40 Coors Light and No. 41
Target teams of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates secured top-30
qualifying positions for the Chevy Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond International
Raceway on Friday. Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Sterling Marlin (third
attempt) and Jimmy Spencer (second attempt) will both participate in the
Winston No Bull 5 program at Richmond.
Jimmy Spencer, driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T, will start in
30th position for the Chevy Monte Carlo 400. Spencer's Target Dodge ran a
124.384 mph lap at 21.707 seconds.
In 25 starts at Richmond International Raceway, Spencer has four top-10
finishes. He has no poles and no wins at the track. His best start is
fifth (5/5/01) and his best finish is ninth (9/8/01).
"Somebody's got to go first. Unfortunately we were one of the fist cars
out," Spencer said. "Any time the track sits for two hours, you know going
in you're going to be in trouble if you're one of the first cars out. We
tried to fix the car for it, but its just part of it. We're going to be
good in the race. We tested here and were really strong on the long runs."
Sterling Marlin, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T, will
start in 32nd position for the Saturday night race. Marlin's lap time in
the Coors Light Dodge was scored at 21.709 seconds (124.372 mph).
In 33 career starts at Richmond International Raceway, Marlin has scored
three top-5 and seven top-10 finishes. He has no wins and no poles at the
track. Marlin's best start is third (6/6/98 and 9/8/01) and his best finish
is fourth (9/11/99) at Richmond. Marlin has not scored a top-10 finish in
his last five races at Richmond.
"We were real loose," Marlin said. "We adjusted for it a little bit, but
the track changed a whole lot from practice. It was a whole lot looser for
us. We tightened the car up from practice, but it was still too loose."
The Chevy Monte Carlo 400 from Richmond International Raceway will be
broadcast on TNT on Saturday, September 7 at 7:30 p.m., e.d.t.
