REMINDER/Twelve Washingtonians to Go Carless for an Entire Month as Part of the Flexcar Challenge
WASHINGTON--Sept. 6, 2002--"Could you live without your car for an entire month?" That's the question 12 Washington, D.C.-area residents are going to answer when they begin the Flexcar Challenge this Friday, September 6.Sponsored by Flexcar, the nation's largest and oldest car-sharing service, the Flexcar Challenge pits men and women against the notion that having a car is a necessity. Participants in the month-long event have agreed to hand over their car keys and travel for 30 days -- to work, the gym, the grocery store -- everywhere -- by means of alternative transportation such as the bus, train, bicycle, carpool and Flexcar. Each participant will keep a journal of his or her experiences which Flexcar will share as the month progresses.
WHAT: Opening Ceremony for the Flexcar Challenge, in which twelve D.C.-area citizens will give up their cars for an entire month and travel by means of "alternative" transportation, thus reducing traffic, pollution and dependence on foreign oil. There will be a "handoff" ceremony in which participants hand over the keys to their car and receive a Flexcar key and Flexcar Challenge Participant Kit. WHEN: Friday, September 6, 2002 9:30 a.m. ET MEDIA NOTE: Flexcar representatives will be available as early as 7 a.m. ET for interviews and on-location shots. WHERE: Gallery Place-Chinatown Metrorail Station, (corner of Seventh and F Streets, NW) WHO: Flexcar Challenge participants and company executives will be on hand to discuss car-sharing and its impact on transit, the environment and more.
