CASCAR Western Series set for Edmonton return
Apollo Motorsports presents the EMCO 200 at Edmonton Int'l Raceway
EDMONTON, AB - CASCAR will make its return to Kevin Dowler's hometown on
September 7 when the CASCAR Western Series visits Edmonton International
Raceway for the EMCO 200. The quarter-mile speedway is the only paved oval
in the Edmonton area, and is located just south of the provincial capital,
in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
Dowler, who resides in Sherwood Park, is one of CASCAR's staunchest
supporters. And in addition to being the driving force behind the creation
and success of the EMCO 200, the CASCAR Super Series regular is preparing
four Fords for action in the 200-lap event. Wade Lee, one of the
front-runners in the Western Series, will pilot his regular Ford Dealers of
Western Canada Taurus in the race. He will be joined by Dowler, in a Ford
Quality Care Taurus. Trevor Seibert, who has raced for Dowler's Apollo
Motorsports team in select events in the past, will return to action for
the Sept. 7 race, in an EMCO Ford, while Derek Polack will drive a Comp
Shop Taurus in his first CASCAR Western Series outing.
Dowler is enthused about racing in his hometown again. The last time the
Super Series raced there was at the City Centre Airport, in 2000. "There is
such a strong racing history in this city that we are excited to be able to
come home and put on - and participate in - a big event like this. When the
race at Saskatoon didn't happen [on Aug. 17] - and knowing that there was a
chance to make something special happen in Edmonton - we decided to see
what we could do. This is a big undertaking, but we're getting a lot of
support to make this thing as successful as possible, given the short
promotional timeframe we're dealing with."
To further flavour the event, Dowler is hoping to entice some of his
fellow Super Series regulars to come out for the race. CASCAR's premier
series is currently in a holding pattern, waiting for its 12th and final
race of the season to take place, at the end of September. "We've been in
contact with several drivers from the East who are interested in taking
part in this event during the break in the Super Series schedule."
A press conference announcing further details of this event is scheduled
for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4 at EMCO's Edmonton branch. Those
wishing to attend should contact Debbie [at EMCO] at (780) 454-9551.
The EMCO 200 race card will also feature: the King of the Claimers, K-Rock
Thunder Cars and the IMCA Modifieds. Those looking for more information
about the EMCO 200 should contact Dowler at (780) 462-9572.
KAWARTHA SPEEDWAY: Kevin Dowler's Ford Quality Care Taurus posted another
top finish, last weekend, at Kawartha Speedway. The trip to Kawartha was
the second of Dowler's career. From Kevin's point of view, the race at
Kawartha bore a striking resemblance to the event at Autodrome Montmagny,
the week before.
The #35 Quality Care Taurus missed the mark, somewhat, in qualifying at
Kawartha, and was required to take part in the 15-lap Final Qualifiers'
race, which he won handily. In the 200-lap feature, Dowler lined up 17th on
the grid, and methodically progressed through the pack. At lap 85, the
Quality Care Taurus was into the top 10. Dowler's goal was to protect his
tires for a strong finish. The plan was working so well, in fact, that the
team opted to forego a pit stop for a new right-side tire - when the
majority of the field pitted at lap 114 - following a red flag. "We changed
our strategy a bit and opted for better track position," said Dowler, who
moved to second place for the ensuing restart. "I would have liked to have
had those 15 laps back from the Final Qualifier race, though, because that
was the difference in our tires, late in the race."
Dowler was running comfortably in third place, with just 20 circuits
remaining, when his handling started to go away. "We lost a couple spots
there at the end," continued Dowler, who came home with a solid sixth-place
finish. "In terms of the points, we only really lost ground to Donnie [race
winner Donnie Thomson], so we're feeling pretty good heading to Delaware at
the end of September. That last race is actually two full-points events, so
we're not out of this thing yet," concluded Dowler, who is currently fourth
in Super Series points.
