FRANKFURT, Aug 27 Reuters reported that automaker DaimlerChrysler said on Tuesday it planned to build its new Grand Sport Tourer (GST) at the Tuscaloosa plant in the United States with the production and market launch set for the end of 2004.
DaimlerChrysler said in statement that it will spend some $600 million to expand the production area at the plant in Alabama, where it also manufactures its successful M-Class sports utility vehicles.
The GST is a wagon-like concept vehicle which seats six passengers in three rows. The vehicle was first unveiled at the Detroit auto show in January.
DaimlerChrysler said the success of the M-Class showed the group had developed an ideal U.S. market for SUVs.
"As a touring car, station wagon, large capacity vehicle and sport utility vehicle rolled into one, the GST is primarily geared to the needs of the North American market," said Mercedes-Benx marketing chief Joachim Schmidt.
"However, we also see great potential for the Mercedes-Benz GST in Europe due to its high functionality and flexibility," he added.
