Angelle & George Bryce lead list of Pro Bike nominees for
Car Craft All-Star Drag Racing team
Americus, Ga., August 23, 2002 - Next weekend, the eyes of the drag racing
community will be firmly focused on Indianapolis, Indiana, as the world's
best quarter-milers gather to compete at the sport's most prestigious event,
the 48th annual U.S. Nationals. However, before the professional classes
even take to the track, a select few will receive some well-deserved
recognition as the 2002 Car Craft Magazine All-Star Drag Racing team will be
announced at an awards banquet on Thursday evening, August 29.
This annual tradition recognizes the outstanding efforts put forth by the
very best in drag racing in twenty-six separate categories encompassing both
the professional and sportsman ranks. Votes are submitted by racers, members
of the aftermarket and media communities, and readers of Car Craft magazine,
the NHRA's National DRAGSTER and IHRA's Drag Review.
The Star Racing team is once again well represented, with team owner George
Bryce among the finalists in Pro Racing Crew Chief, and current POWERade
points leader Angelle Savoie nominated in the Pro Bike Rider category.
For team owner Bryce, who has tuned legendary riders such as the late John
Myers and Angelle to five NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championships, receiving
the Car Craft award would be a most valued accolade.
"I've attended the Car Craft banquet as a teammate for many years, first with
the late, great John Myers and more recently with our defending champion
Angelle," said Bryce. "I've truly enjoyed helping them achieve these awards.
"I've been a Car Craft reader for twenty-five years, and have always wondered
how special it would be to be selected to the All-Star team, since it is
voted on by our fellow racers, the media and most importantly, the many
readers and fans.
"I feel like the Pro Stock Motorcycle category has finally paid its dues.
It's exciting that we have grown enough to where people know who the crew
chiefs are. It would be a great honor to be included with such great
company as John Myers, Dave Schultz and Angelle."
Angelle will be looking to be selected to the All-Star team for the third
time, having won in two of the last three years (1999 & 2001). For the
two-time defending NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, the significance of
the Car Craft award lies in the fans' participation.
"The Car Craft All-Star Racing team is just as important as the championship
to me because the fans are involved," stated Angelle. "It's not only based
on your on-track performance, it's also a popular vote, and you can't beat
being chosen because of the fans' love for you. Because of that, it's
tremendous honor just to be nominated. The way I see it, if you win the
championship, but not the Car Craft award, you're missing something."
Fast Facts:
In the twelve months (and fourteen Pro Stock Motorcycle national events)
since last year's Car Craft All-Star Drag Racing team was announced, Angelle
and the George Bryce-led Star Racing team have:
- Scored six national event wins in eight final round appearances,
including the 2001 U.S. Nationals.
- Captured the 2001 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championship (their second
consecutive title, and Star Racing's fifth), and lead the current POWERade
point standings.
- Logged nine No. 1 qualifying positions, with an overall qualifying
average of 1.78. Angelle has qualified in the top half of the elimination
ladder (eighth or better) at every one of the 86 races in which she has
competed in her Pro Stock Motorcycle career.
- Set a new national elapsed time record with their 7.049-second pass at
the Matco Tools Supernationals in Englishtown, N.J., May 2002, shattering the
previous mark by five hundredths of a second.
- Compiled an impressive 42-8 elimination round record, for a winning
percentage of .840.
- Reset track records at nine events.
- Recorded Low Elapsed Time of the meet at ten races.
- Ran the Top Speed of the event at three races.
- Established a new NHRA record for first-round success. Angelle has not
suffered an opening round setback since August 22, 1999 at Brainerd, Minn.
That span of 43 races (and counting) represents the longest streak in NHRA
POWERade Drag Racing history, eclipsing Bob Glidden's mark of 40.
