#41 Bristol race report

TEAM TARGET FINISHES EIGHTH IN THE FOOD CITY 500
Spencer moves up to 26th place in NASCAR Winston Cup championship points

BRISTOL, Tenn. (August 24, 2002) - The No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T
driven by Jimmy Spencer finished in eighth place in the Sharpie 500 Bristol
Motor Speedway.  Spencer moved up one position to 26th place in NASCAR
Winston Cup championship points; he is nine points behind driver Bobby
Hamilton who is currently in 25th.

Spencer started the 500-lap event in 11th position and raced in the top-10
for the majority of the event.  He radioed in early on that the car was
tight so Team Target made adjustments throughout the night to free it up.  A
smooth 15.5-second pit stop put the No. 41 Dodge out in second position on
lap 156 following a caution period.  Although second position was the
highest Spencer got in the Target Dodge, he raced in the top-10 all night
and came home with an eighth place finish.

"We had a really good car, but we were just too tight," Spencer said at the
end of the race.  "We couldn't get the car free enough to roll through the
center of the corner. We made a lot of changes to it. It was real
interesting. Last time here, the cars with the older tires on won. I thought
we had a top five car. We kept adjusting on it all night and the track got
tighter. We just never had it right. We messed up a little bit, but we're
back on track. 

"It was pretty rough out there. It was typical Bristol. That's why the fans
come. I think if they built 300,000 seats they'd fill it up here. They got
their money's worth. That's what they wanted. It's exciting. I love this
race track. A top-10 is a good thing to come out of here with. It's not what
we wanted. I think we had a better car than that, but it's exciting."

Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, won the Sharpie 500.

500 at Darlington Raceway on September 1, 2002.
